Decided to stay at Claytor this weekend to give the fishing at SML another few weeks to get better. Got on the water about 6:30 a.m. It was about 34 degrees and about 20 minutes into it the fog absolutely socked us in. After about 2 hours of basically doing nothing, waiting for the fog to lift we got going with some boards out, some light lines and some free. Immediately got 2 hits but no hook ups. No more hits for the next hour. A buddy pulls up and we talk to him for about 30 mintues, so I tell the youngest boy to get all lines, except the light lines, while we are talking. Buddy leaves, I crank the motor, put it in gear and out of the corner of my eye I see a pole doubled. Oh no, line in the prop. So because I was stupid enough to not remember or look around, I waste 30 more mintues pulling line out of the prop. Really nice and sunny by this time so we decided that since we haven't fished up near the dam for a while we would run up there. We put out the same set up and start trolling. Quick hook up, small mouth took a really nice gizzard about half his own size. After several more hook ups with smallies the boys start throwing donkey rigs soaked in bang shad spray. We caught smallies all afternoon. A few decent LM, but not a single striper. Was still a fun day spent with the boys and it beats not catching at all, and it surely beats sitting on the couch or doing honey do's.
