Weather: temps starting in the mid 30's, rising to low 50s. Mostly sunny with some light wind from the NW, increasing to 10 mph from E/SE after lunchtime
Water: 57-59, visibility of just a few feet
Techniques: Dollar bill to 10" gizzards on freelined planers - 3 bank-side, 2 channel-side. Light-line gizzard out the back of the boat. Alewife on a lightline planer off and on
Our buddy Nathan's brother was in town from CA for their father's funeral tomorrow, and they were going to spend some time catching up on the water, and one of Nathan's other buddies, Joel, was coming over as well so were going to go out on my rig that gave enough room for everyone. Before my impromtu "swim" yesterday, I did manage to net 16 or so gizzards and I went back out after dark and hit a few lights until a found a pile of alewives to add to the mix
Saturday AM I left the dock about 6:30 and rode down the lake, thankful that I got to see another beautiful SML sunrise......
We headed out about 7am and hit our 1st creek. It was a SLOW start - and actually a slow day overall but that really did not matter as Nathan and Steve got to spend some time catching up - and sharing memories of fishing on SML with their Dad years before when they were kids... and that's what today was really about.
Fortunately it was also about some catching...... Steve fishes for Striper some out in CA on the California Delta, but most of what they catch there are 2-3 lb fish.... unfortunately we did not put him on a monster, but the 1st fish to the boat was a nice 8 lber. Nathan was by the rod when the fish buried the board and then handed it off to his big brother...
Around 9 we picked up and moved to another creek..... finding one for Joel to play with - that went around 11 lbs
We moved on to another creek - not finding any fish where I was expecting them to be but we kept pulling to the back of the creek. We were all focused on the bank-side planers when the light-line off the transom bent over. I grabbed this one - that turned out to be around 9-10 lbs
Around 12:30 or so we decided to head off to get some lunch and then chase bait for a while in the early afternoon before calling it a day..... had them back to the dock around 3, and I went off (with my life-jacket on) to try and load up on some more bait for Sunday morning....
Not the crazy catching day I was hoping for, but the brothers getting to spend some time together and share memories of their Dad is what this trip was really about - so it was a total success
