Friday afternoon we got a late afternoon start so we ran to try and catch a few baits and fish for an hour or so. Bait was not easy but we managed a dozen or so 5" gizzards and went fishing. Caught 3 all about 26" in an hour and a half. Bites were aggressive no hook set necessary - fish on! This was upper blackwater area.
Set the light out that night and threw on it for a while. Normally we can get some decent baits at our dock. But the only thing goin that night was itty bitty ales.
Fished Saturday morning with the left over gizzards. Not even a sniff. Went in a bait hunt around lunchtime to try and supplement the tiny ales I had kept as a just in case. We finally found the motherlode of bait in a cove that was out of the wind.
I threw probably 15 to 20 times knowing there was bait under the boat - caught one 5" gizzard. Bait was in about 20' of water but suspended in the 8 to 15 foot range. I was throwing a 10' 3/4" 1.7 lb/ft net and could not get anything. Also tried a couple tosses with the 6' 1/4" 1.3 lb/ft and nothin there either. I've never seen bait this thick - I would've thought I would accidentally catch something with one of the Nets? Any thoughts or advice?
I'm relatively new to striper fishing and live bait so I'm a bit stumped. Sure would be nice to know where to get big bait - seems like when we do get it it's just by luck when they are under our light. Can't seem to figure out.
No bites Saturday evening. Rough day Saturday. Even as inexperienced as I am I don't think I've went a whole day with no action whatsoever yet.
Water was consistently 59ish. Good visibility.

Feel your pain. Went looking for bait Saturday morning. Hunted for about three hours. Found bait in 20 ft suspended at 10 to 15. Threw and threw got maybe 5 peanuts. Came in for lunch and got a 5/8 net. No luck with it (it's only a 7" betts). Finally after 5 hours just wanted to fish so we settled for peanuts. Started pulling a creek on the b/w side. Got two pull backs right away missed em both then nothing. Skunk

Either the bait was really small or it was really fast. I can tell the difference these days but a year back I would have thrown my 1/2 inch to verify if it was small. If it wasn't small, then it is time to get Stupid! See my 'I love bait' video for more info on stupid!

A lot of times if there thick and small enough to go thru your mesh, you can smell'em on your net when you load it to throw again.

Often you will get over a big school of white perch and at that depth they are just about impossible to catch in the net. They are much faster than gizzards and look identical on the df. I used to chase them around trying 3-4 different size nets. Now when I am sure its them I move on.

I thought the small pinch on sinker to stop your downline sinker was excellent. This is simply classic. You can smell them? That there's a graduate level concept.

I'm happy to say that my teeth days are over. This weekend was my first try with anything over 7'. I tried your shrimpers method and it was very easy to pick up. I think as my new net works loose it will become even easier. With that wind this weekend it was difficult at times to keep the net on the shoulder. After throwing the 10' the 6' felt like was throwing a playtoy in the water. The difference in surface area is amazing.

Work with longer and shorter amounts of hanging net. Vary your toss from badass to easy going. Once you get dialed in, life is good!

Ahhh but yam you have experienced anna' s dreaded 6" catfish in your net right ? Sent from my XT1080 using proboards No.. But I did catch a small cat 3 weeks ago that had a saw like spine. Little bastard stuck me and my finger was infected all week. Last week I caught a mess of crayfish as well. First time for me. Nothing like grabbing your net in the dark and having it grab you back! Ouch!
