This was the first tournament I have fished. Jason and I hunted for shad the night before. He showed me some techniques about throwing the cast net that gave me a lot of confidence. I wasn't perfect in throwing but good enough to catch gizzard. Something pretty neat about our trip out, we came across a fellow who was throwing a net and wrapped it around his tm. Jason suggested we give the guy a few of our gizzards. I was all for it, so we passed a few to him in a bucket. A little while later we came across a guy on the bank fishing who had a light trying to catch bait. Jason put a few gizzard in a bucket and passed it along to him. The next time he threw the net, he caught as many as he gave away! The guy on the bank was very thankful. That was awesome.
Here is a pic, preparing to leave for the lake.
I stayed at the dock on Friday night instead of traveling back to Fincastle. I sat in the car for an hour and could not sleep. All that was on my brain was catching fish. My wife and kids met me at the dock about 5am and helped set up the boat. We left shortly after receiving the code. i continue to hear people from the forum telling me to try something different. So I travel down river to a nearby creek. This is different because i haven't gone down river this fall. We set the spread out and begin to pull. 6 planers on light lines. We had a couple of hits but no takers. My girls got excited when they saw the swirls and splashes behind the bait. I think it was about 9 or 930 when we finished pulling in the creek and came across one that made it to the boat with my 13 year old bringing it in. We took two pics and back in the water.
I decided to go up river after that which now as I am writing wondering why I left where we caught fish. About mid day I could tell my girls had enough. I told them I would take them back to the dock. They were so worried that they had let me down. I assured them they didn't. I was VERY flattered they wanted to be with me, even in the rain. My wife said that they would always remember this. I hope so, that is one goal I have is to give them good memories of there child hood.
After dropping them off i had about three more hours. I went down river to a creek near the bridge. This is trying something different for me. I pulled and pulled without any luck. After a couple of hours, I had a urge. This urge was not planned in the fishing trip. So.... I raced to a bathroom at Captains Quarters. I got back in my boat and realized I lost a couple of planers due to the race. I was frustrated and decided to pack it up.
I did enjoy the time with my family and Jason the night before. I will be at the bay during the next tournament or I would definitely enter.
A HUGE thanks to all the sponsors and the Striper Mafia for making this happen. There is a lot of work that goes into making this tournament great. It was GREAT!
check these smiles out!
