A week or two ago I wanted to start this report with…. Ha, I won. Still believe I can. But, I found a skunk. Here is my report:
Had 2 good friends ,that were not sure until the last minute, fish with me. Both rookies and both ready to get it done. Started at a creek that I knew would be holding fish. We put out a spread of 3 bank side, light line planers….. 2 boards on the deep side and a light line out the back. We marked several fish and couldn't find a taker. Fished it hard for 2 hours with nothing. Big time leaves and big time annoying. Especially with two rookies and I didn't want to touch a rod as I wanted them to have a good time. They did learn how to clear leaves from the boards. Moved to another creek and decided to run 2 boards on each side and a light line out the back because the leaves were so thick. Had a few HARD swings and misses at this creek. Ended up moving one more time. The last spot put us on another TX participant that was having a tough go too. We were running low on bait at this point (for some reason couldn't keep bait alive behind the planer) and put out 2 planers on each side. We ended up with 3 more misses and only 3 baits left. Went to the back of the creek to catch a few more baits and couldn't find a bait. By then, it was getting late so we decided to run the 3 we had. Notta. It was getting close so we called it and I headed to the weigh in they had other obligations.
I thought about someone as competitive as me and having rookies on the rod and that it may be a bad idea to not pick up a rod. After watching them learn how to deploy planers and clear leaves and watch those planers like 5 year olds watching a blue gill cork….. I knew then it wasn't about the competition it was about much more. When I was at the weigh-in and watched the crowd it made it much more clear. I watched folks listening to each other, folks that were laughing and folks that just watched each other. Got to see mward/bentrod do a phenomenal job and bentrod was SMILING. I watched kids laugh and play. I watched the little ones that were exhausted and perk up when it was their time. I got to see the enthusiasm of the next generation. I was among friends that I have not met yet. That's my report.
