Weather: low 60's, overcast & drizzle, no wind to speak of
Water: 64-65, visibility of several feet
Techniques: more of the same - pulling dollar bill to 12" gizzards on freeline planers - and one 3/8 oz weighted planer with a money-maker
Bait was in the tank from the day before - and Tyler rolled in about 6:45. It was still dark so we had a few minutes to tend to the tank which was not looking good - pump did to seem to be blowing air well and upon inspection there was some filter-foss on the pump shaft - removed that and it was doing much better. The fact that I had close to 40-50 gizzards from dollar bill size up to 12" probably didn't help either.
We set out in my creek in a light rain just as soon as it was light enough to see the boards to see if we could find a few fish close by again. We hadn't gotten all the baits out before the first planer board shot off and Tyler was hooked up with what turned out to be an 8-9 lb fish.
One of my fishing superstitions is that you don't want to catch a fish before you can even get all your baits out.... that doing so means the rest of the day will suck. Well..... I was proven right today.... We had plenty of action - but it was mostly of the variety where the board shoots backwards at 100 miles per hour for about 2 seconds and then the fish drops the bait before you could even put your hands on the rod. We had this happen at least 10 times this morning in the creek - several baits had the hooked turned on them. Tyler had one that when he get his hands on the rod the line broke at the planer board
We worked the creek till about 9 or so and then moved to another creek when I'd caught fish the previous two evenings. We had a couple of boils but otherwise the creek was dead.
So, we came back close to home to see if those fish perhaps were ready to stop playing and actually eat.
Nope
Frustrating morning - could have been awesome if all those strikes had hooked up. We were not doing anything different today than we had the day before - perhaps we should have..... guess that's what keeps you coming back.
Oh - obligatory sonar shot of an insane amount of little bait..... the fish Tyler caught coughed up several "peanut" gizzard shad - it wasn't too far from here this cloud of bait was holding.... Wondering what was holding on top of that bait - either larger gizzard, or maybe white perch - don't think it was striper but I guess it could have been a school of smaller stripers.
