Weather: mid 60's rising to mid-70s, overcast until late afternoon when the sun just barley broke through - wind from the East about 5 mph
Water: 64, visibility of 3-5 feet
Techniques: dollar bill to 10" gizzards on freeline planers (5) and one 3/8 oz lightline planer. Baits 10-12' behind the freeline boards. 20' on the light-line board
Headed out this morning before daylight with Chad and my lake neighbor Kevin and his Dad. We'd planned to start about 6:45 but the sun could not break through the clouds so it was probably after 7 by the time we could see just enough to start pulling boards. Chad saw a fish swirl ahead of the boat and threw a swimbait at it and hooked up for 2 seconds.... good thing cause you never want to catch a fish that quick into a trip
We stayed in my creek till 9 or a later - had a number of fish that swirled and popped at some baits but then left it. However we managed to get a few fish in the creek on a mix of the freeline and light line planers. Kevin's Dad got 1st fish and it was our best one of the morning - 34" / 14 lbs. The fish had a huge head but not much length or girth
Chad set the hook on the next one, and they argued about who was going to take the rod for about 5 minutes so Chad kept it.... not as big, but a fish is a fish.
Kevin was next on deck....
We moved to another creek mid morning and fished it till we quit around 11 or 11:30. Found similar action there - a couple of short-striking fish, a few that would swirl and play but not commit. But we found a couple willing to eat....
We headed back to the dock around 11 or 11:30 with 5 fish caught and released and Chad headed back to his place to cook up some chicken and break out the bourbon to watch the Chokies... sorry, I mean the Hokies..... 4 overtimes and then the loss? That hurts.... Kevin, his Dad and I went to grab some pizza for lunch and then when we got back I jumped back on the boat and headed out to catch bait as we'd pretty much fished ourselves out of bait in the morning. Out around 1:30 and by 2:30 I had 30-40 nice new baits in the tank.
Man I love the fall fishing scenery
I decided I had enough baits to fish Sunday and have some for the evening bit, so I headed back to the creek where I had action Friday night and put out my baits about 3:30. Found them there again.... and a nice class tonight - caught 2 that were both right at 33" and 14 lbs - and then as I was wrapping up the evening, pulling in some boards, the light-line planner got slammed and I ended the night with a 8 lb / 27"
Back to the house at sunset to hit the "replay" button for Sunday morning
