Hi all. I just got back from a trip to SML, Oct 4-8. The water was pretty low there, probably couldve gotten my uncles pontoon boat out but in the end didnt even bother with it. So i spent the weekend fishing from the dock, which is what i do at night there anyways.
I didnt bother fishing for bass with the water down so much and me stuck on shore, just didnt seem like it would be productive with my most productive areas around the dock being dry. So i broke out the night crawlers, cheap frozen shrimps, and decided to skip chicken livers altogether this time. because of submerged grass i used a drop-shot set up most of the weekend to keep my bait out of the grass.
as normal there, i caught a ton of white perch, bigger than normal this time too. they were biting all day and night, voracious feeders they are. fun on light tackle though but almost a nuisance at times.
i caught very few bluegill. theyre always small there, usually not worth fishing for.
i was really surprised when a school of nice sized yellow perch came through, everyone was 10 inches or so and thick. lots of fun, pretty fish. i only catch them at SML when its nice and cool outside this time of year. never seen them come through that big average size though, usually much smaller.
next up was the green sunfish, they seemed to also love the shrimp that i had out for the catfish. never caught any at SML before this weekend. average size was bigger than the avg bluegill i catch there. i even threw a few out live hoping a big flatty would come by wanting a meal but got no takers. i also chunked a few up into cut bait and it worked pretty good for the kitties, in fact was all i could get the kitties to bite so im glad i tried it. it netted me several 3-5lb flatheads.
overall, it was a good weekend for me just lazing around and doing some simple fishing. i caught a bunch of fish, drunk a bunch of budweisers and just relaxed. it was great for my mental state, it needed a refreshing lol.
btw, i was fishing in a cove in the craddock creek section of the lake...
