A few forum members took advantage of the Sea School that came to SML back in January. They are coming back mid-October....
Please be advised that Sea School will be offering the OUPV Captain's License class in the Smith Mountain Lake area Saturday, October 10th thru Sunday,
October 18th. The class will run two weekends (Saturday & Sunday) during the day 9a.m. to 6p.m. and five evenings (Monday-Friday) 6p.m. to 10:30p.m. The class will be held at the Moneta Community Center. We will also be offering the Commercial Assistance Tow Endorsement class and the Upgrade to Masters class.
If you are interested in any additional information or would like to getregistered to take the class, please contact the Sea School Charleston, SC office at the number below.
Let us help you obtain your USCG Captain's License.
<more info as follow-up>
The tuition for the OUPV class is $580 and that covers your time in the class and your books. When you sit for the test there is an $80 test fee that goes to Sea School as well. The other costs to get the Captain's License and where that money goes is listed below:
USCG fee $145 - paid to Coast Guard
TWIC card fee $128 - paid to contractor for TSA
TET fee $25 - paid to TET (company that sends in examiners to the area to test group)
Drug test $75 - paid to APCA Drug Consortium
Physical $75-$100 - paid to physician
CPR/First Aid $60-$75 - paid to provider
Plotting equipment approximately $40 Can be ordered from West Marine or Amazon (set of dividers and parallel rule)
We usually tell students that before you have a license in your hand, you can expect to spend $1300.
Once you take the test, Sea School will issue you a diploma that you will present to the Coast Guard along with your application package letting them know what you are applying for. The diploma proves to them that you have satisfied their testing requirements. The diploma is good for 12 months, so you can spread all this cost out over that period of time.
