The lake is really low, I know it has been lower some years ago during the drought and I know we haven't had any significant rain lately but it seems surprisingly low. AEP and probably some evaporation have drawn it down below the riprap in my creek (Becky's) and it occurred to me that it can't be good from an erosion point of view. I was down on my dock this afternoon watching the riprap and banking getting undercut by the wake. The water clarity is suffering from the erosion and fish that hang around the dock have hightailed it to some place else. So much for Shoreline Management. Fortunately my dock is plenty deep but folks in the back of the creek are probably going to have a hard time.

792.5 currently - mid-week here - but most of that drop happening today - had been holding around 793.5-794, just a bit under normal-pond. Looks like it very well may be a a low for the last year - though not uncommon over the time. AEP has to keep a certain amount of downstream flow.... typical pattern is draw-down through the week (with drain & pump cycles each day), and then more of a recovery over the weekend when they can pump-back more with generation demands lower over the weekend. Time to get worried when week on week there is downward trend. Go look at the period from 6/1/2012 to 2/1/2013.... that was a problem..... result of a broken flow-gauge downstream at brookneal during late spring/early summer when they had to release a certain amount for the spawn, and then a dry summer/fall...... lots of boats were hanging dry because the lift would not go down that far, or they had dirt underneath them. smithmountainlakelevel.com/All that said - at least we're not in the situation that Boone is in now and will be for the next 5 or more years..........

dang, i hate when the water gets real low. cant even net my fish from off the dock. and at times havent been able to get my uncles boat out. i hope they bring it up some for labor day. the only advantage i got from water being extremely low was being able to see all the structure and cover around the dock i fish from thats normally underwater. i took a few pictures last time...

Doesn't look like the lake level is going to rebound much before the weekend. It's falling as I type ?

Yup it's really low and I am worried about the erosion that a Labor Day weekend will bring. Except for the drought and broken gauge a few years ago it is as low as I have ever seen it. Pretty amazed that AEP would let a big holiday weekend come without bring the level back up to prevent erosion.

Anyone know of a site, thread, post that talks about ramp conditions? Is the State park ramp still useable?

I think there's a long way to go before ramps are sketchy. Somewhere around 790' and it gets sketchy in places.

Thanks johnr, coming down for 2 week vacation and usually launch at the state park. I remember several years ago having to load at Parkway because it was about 3 1/2 feet down.

Talked to State Park people today. They say the park launch is still good. We're down to 291.78

Arrived last night Rain, and Rain today and tomorrow! well, should help the lake I call this striper weather. Somewhere on days like this the bait gets on top and so do the fish. Finding them is key.

Arrived last night Rain, and Rain today and tomorrow! well, should help the lake I call this striper weather. Somewhere on days like this the bait gets on top and so do the fish. Finding them is key. Plus, on days like this, there are very few wakeboats and pontoons wandering around.
