i was looking at the humminbird helix 5and 7 for side scan . i am guessing that the 7 in screen will show more detail. has anyone had any experience with these models? also is there much difference in the standard transducer vs the high def transducer? thanks.

I can hook you up with THE guy on those products - he's in product marketing for Hummingbird in GA.... and also a hard-core striper fisherman. He's going to have a bias of course but he's certainly very knowledgable about the products. If you are on Facebook, go check out Bill Carson..... I may still have his contact info - else can probably get it.....

The RES on those units is amazing. When put beside a *98 or *99 unit you can see a complete difference. I think they look great and are great for the money. Just can't network them to other birds......... I have only seen the 5 in person.

Sure thing. Oh and you won't notice a huge difference between the compact SI ducer and the HDSI. BUT!!! If you do want to upgrade, DO NOT take the compact ducer out of the packaging. You can send it back to Hbird and they will give you MSRP credit towards the HD ducer. Will cost you around $75 to upgrade. Probably worth the extra $75, but not sure I'd uninstall a good compact ducer, and pay $200 for the HDSI to install it.

Glad this topic came up I'm about to pull the trigger for the 7 even though I'm in a yak a couldn't stand the lil 4 in screen ,so got rid of it and been studying them hard last few nights was told maybe someone here can chime in that on lowrance say hds 7 with structure scan I have to run two transducers can't really find a direct answer to this .and since I'm in a yak don't won't to have to deal with 2 transducers if that's the case .also like what I've read on the pro series dragon fly but I can get the hook up on lowrance and hummingbird so leaning towards the helix 7 as of now

i read where the high def wont make a difference on the helix 7 because it doesnt operate on 800 frequency . not sure if thats correct though.
