I ran across a deal for 4 of the Shimano Catala's for a really good price(250.00). My calcuttas are more that that for each. Only problem is I have never used the Catala before. It looks like a cheaper version of the Calcuttas. I currently have several calcuttas and not too sure about the comparison.
Do any of you have the Catalas? If so, what is your take.

Looks like an older discontinued model of reel. Saw one reference that said the Cardiff replaced the Catala. Tyler's got some Cardiff's and they are good reels... if the Catala performs as well and the reels are in good shape then you probably have a reel deal

I've definitely made poorer decisions. Figured they would be good for the rookie side of the boat.

I also got a deal on 4 new Catala 400's back when they stopped making them, have an issue with the anti reverse on one of them but the other 3 have been rock solid, smooth drag.I would buy again over the new 6500's if I found a deal.

Thanks for the feedback happycamper. I'll take 3 out of 4. Since they will be used for planer board fishing I feel like the backlash should be nil.

What model are they Gator? The 400's had a problem initially with the line pawl wearing out and sticking on the worm gear. Folks thought it was a major gear problem but it was simply a 3.00 part. A bud has 6 of them and ordered new ceramic pawls for them and he likes them now.

Sunday I was lubing a few of my reels and noticed the pawl cap was missing on one of my calcutta 100's. I went online and found them for 1.68 each but needed to meet a 5.00 minimum order. Got to looking around and discovered the ceramic pawls and a few other items and didn't have a problem with the 5.00 min order after that. They are 400's and the pawls will be replaced.

Gator - where did you get your parts? I want to try changing out some parts in a couple of the non-Line counter Tekota's I have to make them auto-engage - figured' I'd try it with two first before doing the rest.

If I need work done on a Calcutta I send them here. www.davesreelservice.com/ He is slow as crap but they can fix anything. He has two of my 400's now. It takes 5-6 weeks for them to go over them.

Mikes custom made the ceramic pawls. I think he also sells on ebay. The Shimano reels can be troublesome to work on so you need a parts diagram and knowledge on how the parts interface to do it correctly. But otherwise they are easy to work on. You can find information on utube. I always start beginners out on an open face reel first to build their confidence. Bait casting reels can be a real problem with beginners and that is why some members have 42 rods on board.

Mikes has a large gallery of reel schematics for viewing. Some are really good and others really suck. Also, they are located in BC, Canada so.... it take a few days for parts to arrive.
Formula, I carry a lot of rods because I use them.
