Well I broke down and bought a HDS9 Gen 3. Not installed yet but soon. I noticed that the software on the unit needs to be updated. My question is do any of you have a preference in terms of brand of micro SD cards? I understand that some can be a problem in Lowrance units. Any experience between PNY and ScanDisc? Thanks.

Agree with StriperJohn - I usualy juse Sandisk and have not had an issue - you don't need the faster speed ones for that use..... there MAY be an upper memory size limitation - at least used to be on the older HDS units.... however a 2GB card will be more than enough for the memory update I think....

There were issues on some LCX units where you couldn't use the "new" SDHC cards so you had to use the original spec SD cards which were hard to find near the end... I can't remember exactly, but the biggest you could use was measured in MB (as in MegaBytes) not GB.
I don't know of any issues with HDS units.

Just be careful. Sometimes software updates introduce new issues in the "real world". I go to BBCboards.net and talk with the guys in the electronics section there. They seem to know what software updates are the best ones to use (or not use.) I say if you dont have a reason to update, dont do it. IMO

Sounds like it is similar to iPhone updates, I often skip certain updates based on what I read on line.

That exactly right!! I had and hds-5 that didn't have structure scan capabilities, so I updated it so that it would recognize my LSS box. Things like that warrant software updates. If the unit is really buggy Id try and update also. Other than that, let the others do the test runs on the new software
