Anybody out there using a Lowrance Elite 4 dsi or and Elite 5 dsi?
particularly interested in the speed it records at, some say they don't work when stopped and work better between 6 and 40 mph. Do the gen 2s have dsi along with the side scan, not able to afford one of the gen 2s but maybe one of you guys can help> I'm looking at the Elite 4 DSI to use in conjunction with my LCX27c. Thanks for any input!

Yep - the HDS StructureScan has both downscan and side-scan - the Elites' only are down-scan.

What they are saying is that when you are effectively stopped, the downscan is drawing and redrawing over and over what is right below you, so you get a big smudge. To get pretty pictures of structure you need to be moving along at some speed - a few mph to around 8 mph seems to work the best for the StructureScan on the HDS. I know of SS units holding bottom lock at 30+mph, but you're just getting a bottom trace - certainly no view of structure and I don't think you're going to mark fish/bait like you can with the traditional sonar (which is probably OK if you are still using your LCX27c).

On the HDS I believe you can change the scroll / "ping" speed for the StructureScan which would allow you to compensate some for slower or faster speeds to some degree - not sure if the DSI allows this tweak or not....

This shows downscan and side-scan at 0.1 mph - unfortunately no structure (but fortunately some fish!)


Here is one over some trees with lots of fish - not exactly sure of speed, but 0.1 - 0.4 mpg is a good guess as it was downlines over a school.



I can't find any tucked away of structure at the target 3-8 mph - although Tyler's pic a while back of the bridge is a good example......

I have the mark 5 pro and can change ping so I believe you should be able to on elites!
