My ~8 year old nieces are coming up next weekend and want to go fishing... The problem is, the only fishing I do on the lake is LMB and stripers, neither of which I think will hold their attention long enough to catch a fish, and a pretty high chance of a skunk since I don't fish the lake in the summer Are there any sure-fire areas for brim on the lake? I have access to a couple of farm ponds where I know they can catch plenty of brim and LMB. The problem is my brother took them for a boat ride in a jon-boat a couple of weeks ago and they loved it have have been excited about riding in my "big" boat. I'm thinking they need to decide if they want to ride in the big boat on the lake, or catch some fish in a jon boat with no motor in a pond. Big, weighty decision to put on a couple of little girls

Bluegills love the rip rap at SML. Sunrise and sunset is when I have found them to be most active. Which is good with my son. He is usually never up before daybreak. And enjoys the water during the day. We use small 1/16 or 1/8 oz crappie head jigs with tubes with a small foam float about 2' above. And sometimes small live minnows. Cast to within 2' of the rip rap and tell them to pay attention, the BGs will bolt for the jig and if snagged will bolt for the rip rap.. Use a very light rod reel line setup for more action!!
I admit I enjoy BG fishing too. Especially if my son likes it too. Attention spans are short at those ages. Other option would be to hire a striper guide to put them on some fish. I am sure they would be tickled to death any size striper caught. Good luck and enjoy the day with them, anytime spent with them will be memorable.

We use pieces of night crawler on small hooks - right up on the rip-rap or banks. And heck - I'd be excited about going fishing on that big boat too

I haven't been to SML in a while but I'm sure you guys have white perch and that's what I go for when I'm bored. I usually jig for them with a small castmaster with an inch and a half piece of night crawler hanging on the treble hook. If you can find some 10 inchers their great for a fish fry too.

What about taking them to the pond for some hot action, then just take them on a boat ride in he big boat at the lake and do some swimming? just a thought. You'd be the #1 uncle then right?!
good luck and be safe in whatever yal do

If the girls don't care to handle worms and some don't. Try small pieces of raw bacon it works well and stays on the hook a while before having to bait again. Hey , everybody loves bacon. Wee, Wee, Wee. all the way home.

That's what I'm thinking if I can fit it all in the schedule. Maybe SML in the morning and then pond fishing in the evening if we strike out on rip-rap brim fishing... It's going to be a busy weekend, I might have to take a day off work next week to recover. The bar is set pretty high for #1 uncle. Their other uncle let them help service lawnmowers and tractors and then took them for a ride in the jon boat. Not sure I can top using an air powered impact wrench... Maybe we can sharpen my mower blades with an angle grinder.

You will get tired of baiting hooks real quick if using worms with girls. That's why I switched to the crappie tubes. . They are reusable and definitely won't make a mess of your hands or boat.

So tired... I don't know how you guys 20 years older than me can take grandkids fishing. I'm dead on my feet right now.
The girls caught over 50 fish off of some riprap. Most of them some kind of small warmouth type fish with a few bluegills mixed in.
A lot of swimming was mixed in with the fishing and I don't have a swim platform so I got my exercise slinging 40-50 lb girls back into the boat.

They were baiting thier own hooks about 1/3 through the day and taking some if the fish off the hook unless the hook was in too good. In hindsight I should have mashed down the barbs.
Some of the casts were pretty terrifying to me but nobody got hooked.

Good stuff Uncle Brian! Sounds like you came out unscathed...... got to watch those kids and their casts.... Matt and I went over to the 4H on Tuesday AM to assist with the kids fishing activity there and one kid almost got Matt in the eye - his glasses resulted in only the small weight hitting his eye and not the hook getting there.... scary for a second.....
You'll have them chasing stripers in no time.......
