I am just wondering if its even possible the channel cats in the lake are stunted. I do a lot of catfishing off the dock at night there on SML. I've caught so many channel cats that are 18-20 inches long and weigh 3-lbs that i stopped measuring and weighing them, I just pretty much know what a 3-lb 18-20 inch channel cat looks like now. rarey do i catch one bigger, heavier, longer. I'm specifically asking about the channel cats, not worried about the flatheads, bullheads, whatever. One weekend about 3 years ago i must've caught 150 channel catfish or more in one weekend off the dock, and id guarantee 90-95% of them were 18-20 inches and weighed 3-lbs. I havent come close to duplicating that number of fish caught in a weekend since, but i still cant seem to get any bigger channel cats, and you would think the odds of a bigger fish would increase greatly having caught so many, but nope....

I'm just glad to hear they are still being caught. Used to live in a townhouse around R28. Used to catch all we wanted using bluegill live and cut. Moved over to a house on the Blackwater now we are lucky to catch two or three a weekend. Didn't know if they were thinning out or it was just the change in location.

All the fish are on the Roanoke side.

Sounds like a location and bait thing. Fishing cut shad on main lake points will give you bigger channels

I fish the upper end of the lake mostly and get a lot of 6-10 pound cats.

Sounds like a location and bait thing. Fishing cut shad on main lake points will give you bigger channels im pretty much limited to a dock for my catfishing. so it could be the limited location. as for bait, i've tried a variety of bait, but i cant catch any shad. ive caught plenty of alewives off the dock with the throw net, but no shad... last september when the water was really low i did manage a couple 6-lbers, one channel and one flatty. both when i decided to use my lightweight setups. sucked having to pull them up on the dock though and risk losing them, the net would not reach them and this was with me laying on my belly and holding the net on the very end of the handle lol
