Weather: temps in the 60's, overcast then light rain, no wind
Water: 65, visibility of maybe 2'
Techniques: ales or 4" gizzards on downlines (2), Big ales on lightlines (3), large gizzards on freeline planers (4), large ales on freeline or lightline planer (2)
Time Fished: 6:15a - 9:15a
# of Boats Seen: 2 bass boats, 1 striper boat
One of our buddy's was looking to do some catfishing on Friday night and was looking for an angle for some bait to use. I agreed to help him out since I was going to be up at the lake on Thursday evening through Sat AM. I headed out around 10pm in a slight drizzle and threw on three or four lights - figured I'd get enough for him, and if it was easy and I could get enough, I might just fish on Friday AM for a few hours. With the rain bait was not overly easy - at least the larger alewives were not all that relevant, but I did manage to get around 10 big gizzards, 2+ dozen "silver dollar" gizzards (5 -5.5" I guess), and a good half-dozen big mongo alewives. Put the boat in the slip somewhere after midnight.
I decided to go ahead and set the alarm for 5:45 and fish near home. Had lines in the water by around 6:15 - worked my creek, pulling the banks with big gizzards and then baits out on the deeper side. Had some nervous bait, and two swirls, but that was it. Plenty of bait in the creek though
I kept on pulling out into the main channel and hit a number of main lake points and marked scattered singles. There were gizzards flipping all around me in the channel, as well as carp rolling. Probably not a good sign when looking for striper.
I did pick up one small 1.5 - 2 lb largemouth off a channel point. I think he'd been on the light-line for a while before I realized it - honestly thought my bait was just foul hooked. When I finally pulled it to move to another spot I had one ale that ahd been skinned, and another that had it's eyes pecked out by something (perch I'm guessing). A gizzard on the channel side was also MIA - guess that board got slammed at some point when I was not looking
I moved on up the lake a bit to hit the mouths of a creek where I've had success this time of year, but did not mark much of anything as I pulled bait across the point. I pulled on into a creek and worked a bank - again with some nervous baits but not action. Started to pull my stuff in to head to the house when a board with a gizzard got slammed - thought I was going to kick the striper skunk to the curb.... and it felt like a striper..... for a second....... then, I thought I'd missed the hookup....... then I saw the 4 lb bass.....
Oh well - back in the slip just before 9:30...... wish I'd have more time to hit a few other spots, or make a longer run.... but you gotta let the fish win every once in a while
