School's out for summer! Thus I got the itch to come to SML even though this time of the year is not my favorite. And of course, there were no rooms so rather than do something wise, i decided that I would just sleep on the boat.
Arrived at 12am on Saturday morning with 20 minutes of sleep. I went to bed and then immediately woke up and left. I live 2 hours away from SML and I already had a tank full of big gizz and jumbo ales before my alarm went off! On Saturday what I found was that at different times of the day, all the various 24 inch 6 pound fish that I keep catching everywhere I go, either will hit ales or shad exclusively. No pattern in terms of time of day either. Weird! But...last year at this time, the big shad bite was dead! NADA. This year is totally different. Blowups, planer board bop...the whole nine yards!
So then Saturday night came. I figured I would do some thunder sticking before retiring to sleep on the boat in a quiet cove. I was getting tired of catching trees and running my TM into rocks but then I got my first glorious night hit this year! A whopping 1/4 pound white perch! These little bastards were sticking me all day from getting caught in my net...so I was done!
Ah sleep!
......NOPE!
Cinder block hell! The sounds everyone wants to hear...unless you are trying to sleep. And the boats all loud and fast... and anchor lock is so noisy...it just didn't happen! So I just thought of the guys on Deadliest Catch and started to catch bait.
Seems reasonable....dead groggy tired...and I choose to throw an 18 pound net for the next 5 hours! I will say...I love my new technique...the Shrimpers Method!!! I am throwing better better now than I ever have! FUN!
So finally, today, my room was ready and I slept in the afternoon for a few hours. I then headed to murky waters to see what I could find. And what I found was serious action on my shad with no hookups. I marked a ton of fish as well. However, the underwater camera tells the real story. These were not striper...
The last interesting thing I will share is that oddly enough, it seems that this guy just needed a friend.
He swam with my hooked shad for 20 minutes! I wonder if this is a strategy...you know swim with the hooked dude and you know he gets eaten before you do.
The under water world continues to amaze me!
