Hey guys as many of you know I'm and Abu Garcia 6500c3-4/5500c3-4 reel guy. Most of my reels are older then my son of 40 years so I have some experience with them. The most trouble I've had with them over the years is the line guide worm gear wearing out from the pawl rubbing it(only 3 so far). But that wear causes a reaction of wear on end bushings which feels like a drag problem but is actually a slight wobble on the worm gear shaft causing it to stick. This winter I purchased a reel upgrade kit that consists of two ball bearings at the end of the worm gear shaft, a titanium line guide and a ceramic pawl. Used that reel Saturday chasing top water fish and the reel casts longer and smoother then I can ever recall. Great upgrade from a site online called www.mikesreelrepair.com. It's a bit expensive at $36.95 but I love the upgrade especially for older baitcasting reels.

That is a good upgrade for new reels as well. I have all 7000 series. If you look around on ebay, you will find cheaper prices. Also the drag washers are another nice upgrade.
