I am wanting to get input on what to look for when shopping for new equipment? Our goal is to catch striper and catfish at SML.

For the money, the Garmin 93sv cannot be beat, in my opinion.
This is a loaded question that you asked..It depends on how you plan to fish and use a sonar when it comes to figuring out what model to buy.
For me, I went with an Elite 7hdi on my boat last spring. The down imaging was important to me to determine walleyes and white perch from stumps and branches. Side imaging was not useful for walleye fishing to me at the time. Now I am going to the 93sv for the side imaging to find structure, bluegill beds, schools of fish, and pockets of bait. Those things will lead me to predator fish quicker than driving around blindly hoping to find features with my down imaging. I can cover a lot more water with the side imaging.

The only way you can buy success at striper fishing is to spend money on gas to be on the lake as much as possible. That said, the Lowrance HDS line with sidescan is very popular here.
The Gen3s are coming out now, so if you're on a budget, watch the classifieds on fishing boards for a deal on a Gen2 or even Gen1... A lot of HDS-8 Gen2's with LSS-2 sidescan have popped up lately from people upgrading to Gen3 touch. You have to check often though because they don't last if they are priced right.
BBC and THT have good classified sections to watch.

My buddy got a Garmin 93sv recently and I like it! It's the real deal for $1199 all inclusive - sonar, side and down imaging, and detailed mapping in a 9" light and thin unit. And I'm a Lowrance guy! Lowrance and Hummingbird aren't even in the same ballpark on a comparable unit.
