I have an HDS7 & 12 gen2. Can I link the two together by simply plugging into both units with an Ethernet cable? Or do I need a sonar-hub?

Yes - Ethernet cable between the two units and they will be linked up. If they are both Gen2 units, I believe you can share chart-card from one to another. You can also then view the xducer from either unit at the other (network sonar), or view the local sonar of each unit (disable the network sonar option).
