Weather: Overcast, a few left-over sprinkles, temps in the 50's, winds 5-10 mph from NW
Water: 52-54, visibility of 2-5'
Techniques: Large gizzards and one monster alewife on freeline planer boards (4-6) pulled in creeks
Time Fished around 4:30p - 7:30p
I called it a week around 2pm and got on the water. Decided to look in my own creek for bait and sure enough I found what I was looking for. Threw for a little over an hour and put 36-40 baits in the tank
I was struggling on where to fish the evening. Tyler was perhaps jumping on, but wasn't 100% certain. Was thinking about heading one direction where I had reports of larger number of fish - though smaller overall - or to go hit some spots I fished last weekend. I started to head towards numbers and then made a decision part-way to go the other route.
Got to the target creek and setup - bait in the water less than 5 minutes and it was Fish On! Guess I made a good call 35.5" / 15-16 lbs
I made another pass and a bit on down the bank I had another one on - smaller - 32.5" / 13 lbs
Kept on pulling without any more action, but on the way back up I had a few missed hook-ups, and then one that was on good but tangled in another line - as I tried to free the other line to avoid a break-off the fish shook itself loose....
Around then Tyler called and was ready to hit the water. I went and picked him up and we made the (wrong) call to go to a different creek. Well, there were fish there - we had something terrorizing our gizzards and the one poor monster alewife that we had out on a planer and one that came loose on the way to the boat. Tyler shook off his skunk with a nice fish had we been in a greenfish tournament.... 6 lbs on the Bogas
We worked that creek hard till dark - finally picked up one other smaller striper - in the 8 lb / 29" range.
Lots of boils, nervous bait, the poor alewife jumping out of the water, etc, etc - but those fish just did not want to really eat this evening. Likely to be foreboding for Saturday but we won't know till we go.....
