Just wanted to know how you guys were rigging your stinger hooks. I have been floating my stingers. Meaning I tie a shorter stinger leader(about 4") and I don't stick it in the bait. I don't use treble hooks either. I like a 3/0 octopus hook instead of the trebles. Is this a common practice here? Just wanted to hear some of your thoughts.

Is it working for you? Are you getting hookups that way?
We've found that with trebles when it gets knocked out of the bait the bait will generally not get touched. Guess they see the three dangling hooks. Know some that run it dangling and seems to work. Who knows? Maybe depends on how aggressively they are feeding

Maybe depends on how aggressively they are feeding I have been catching fish on smaller baits lately....As you know, I am pretty new to fishing for stripers with live bait and use many "different" techniques that I learned while fishing in the salt. To answer your question....Not had much luck with BIG bait....YET. My thoughts are... why poke another hole in the bait? When a big fish inhales the bait it is going to suck the stinger in too.Does this contribute to more gut hooks. I would rather not catch a fish if I had to gut hook it.

I'm with you there. In my book stinger hooks are reserved for the largest of baits and when they are short striking - winter and early spring. We rarely get a deep hooked stinger as a result. When they are eating solid then the stinger hooks come off - typically by early / mid April.
It's a judgement thing and you - adapt not something you use all the time in my view.

Gator I will post a picture after my next Sml outing of how to bridle rig a big gizz and run a stinger without drawing any gizz blood. Once you set bridle with zop tie you lay 5/0 circle stinger along side the gizz and secure with a rubber band. Lively bait!

We leave 2-4 rods set up with stingers, and if we cant catch bait big enough to use em we just put two baits on there.

Gator, my camera told me that you should keep doing what you are doing, and if you got some ales or nuts, put one on your free hanging stinger of a rod or two.
