With all the recent rains and the cooling temps at night I got up early and made the trip to Black Water Marina (mag) to see if the stripers have started moving that way. Gizzards are still tough to catch in the day up that way. Plenty of peanuts to go around though. No sign of a alewife for me this morning. Did get the boat in the water before the sun came up and one throw of the net got me 18 money maker gizzards, that one throw ran them off though. I ran 4 down lines to 30' , two 1/2oz weighted planners (one on each side) down 15-18' , and two 1/2 oz weighted light lines a good ways from the boat. Messed around till noon with no luck at all!! bummer Told my partner "let's change up and try the catfish". Still with baits out we trolled to a wall that looked like a big ol flathead should be, readied the anchors, and before the anchors where dropped something had grabbed one of my planner board rods!! Fought for a minute or two and had a 17lb flattie in the boat! Thought well this could be the change we needed. Fished for about 3 more hours with only two channels to count. By 4 pm I've had all I could take of fighting the wind in the John. Little rain didn't help any either! 17lb flattie wasn't a wasted trip though! Beats a day of working any day!
