had planned to be at lake at day break with my dad and a friend Dillon. But Dillon crashed his car on the way to the house to meet us. By the time he got his car out of the ditch we were running a little late. Made it to the lake about 9:00. went out in search of bait. Nothing in the creek where my boat is kept. Finally found some in the back of a creek. Mostly all small. After throwing the net for over an hour ended up putting 8 mongos in the tank. marked tons of big bait but it all seemed to be holding in 30+ fow. finally put out my striper buffet. 3 mongos on planer boards,2 jumbo peanuts on planer boards, 1 jumbo peanut on float, 2 jumbo peanuts on down rods.dillon caught the first fish on the float. All the other action came from the mongos.http://s744.photobucket.com/share/links?u=http%3A%2F%2Fs744.photobucket.com%2Fuser%2Fnrvthunder%2Fmedia%2FMobile%2520Uploads%2FIMG_20141229_194425.jpg.html%3Fsort%3D4%26o%3D3 About dark the bait rolled in around us an I was able to put 30 or so mongos in the tank in 8 or 10 throws. 15 to 25 fow. Tuesday started some better at least no car crash. We did have snow up here on the mountain that made us get a little later start. Arrived at the water at about 8:30 handed a few bait over to Mward and headed back to where we had caught them the day before. Action was good as soon as we put the bait out. Broke one off caught 2 and missed some early. As the clouds cleared up the action slowed down. We were just about to call it a day when a genius in a deck boat threw the biggist wake he could on us. We were pointed straight at it and it still came over the bow 4 times. Not exactly how we wanted to end the day but a great two days of fishing. One of dads fish from Tues.

Jason thanks for posting the report.. Question for you: What size net and mesh did you use to catch your bait? I am looking to buy on here soon. My plan right now is to go with a 8' 5/8mesh or maybe a 10' 5/8mesh.. I have never thrown a 10' and I am not 100% I will like it..

Fishon, on my first net a year ago, I bought a 5/8 8 footer because I was scared to commit to a 3/4. I also didn't believe I could throw a 10 footer. Bottom line, I couldn't throw an 8 footer too and once I could, I quickly wished I had a 10 footer. I also found the 5/8 to not really do anything real good. I would say keep whatever net you have and use it for little stuff and ales. Then get yourself a cherry 3/4 10 footer and make it your friend. Throw that sucker in your yard over and over and over. Think about becoming a great net thrower. Within months, my old and somewhat fat ass shaped up and not only can I throw a 10 footer all day long, my wife is actually attracted to me and doesn't have to go down to the local sleazy gym to get her eye candy fix! Okay... Maybe I embellished a bit... But... Hopefully my words offer some direction.

I was just thinking the 10' might wear me out. But, I will take your advise and try the 10' 3/4" and see what happens.. I made a bunch of throws at Big Gizzards last weekend with my 8' 3/8 mesh net and did not catch one.. There was big bait around but I pretty sure they were just swimming off before my net worked it's way to the bottom.. I really don't want to drop to much money into the net so, I am still unsure of what brand I will go with.. My guess is a Tim wade would run around $200 bucks. But I do not know as I haven't taken the time to call him yet..

Yam is dead on. Mine is a 10' calusa 3/4" 1.7lb per ft. And if I were to buy a new one it would be one like yam just got. 10' 7/8" mesh Tim wade. Its hard to catch big shad in deep water. I would say almost impossible with an 8 ft net in 30 fow. The shad were solid on my sonar from 12 to 32 ft. And my net came up empty time after time.

To clarify, my 7/8 really does not make a big difference in deep water. However at 15 feet, it is deadly! Some anecdotal evidence is suggesting that LiveBaitJunkee's 1 inch with lighter material is the way to go for deeper shad and a bunch of us are starting to investigate using tape to keep the net more open as it sinks. But I don't have anything conclusive yet to report.
But for a starter net... I would forget all that jazz and get the 3/4 or 7/8 and concentrate on shad that are in 20 foot or less.

Keep in mind as well that the clearer the water, the better the chance the shad see your net before it even hits the water.

Fishon I went from a 7 foot to a 10 foot years ago and found the 10 to be easier to throw. I use Calusa nets (made by Cracker just their cheaper net) and learned to throw from their website video. It ia a pretty effortless method I still use and I am pushing 70. I would suggest you try a few methods and determine whats easiest for you. Just remember there will be days when you will throw that thing 30 plus times.;D
