Decided to forgo the annual striper trip to SML this year and head to the Eastern Shore to try our luck for a monster. We don't have a Bay boat, just a Tracker Tundra 18', but the weather looked like it was going to cooperate so down we went.
Well Saturday morning there was still a SCA and so it was pretty rough on us. We felt safe, but didn't get out to where wanted to go. I almost decided to try chumming , but was able to fight it off. We had put out of Cape Charles. In the afternoon the seas were calming down, but it still rocked us around a good. Drifted eels, but no takers.
Sunday morning put out of Cape Charles again and headed North. Everybody and their brother was up North it seemed. We did a couple drifts, but no fish. Came back down South in the evening and got on school after sunset and started jigging while our eels were out. They were smaller fish. Landed only one 8 lber and had probably another dozen on. As we were trying to get back on the school, one of our eels got slammed and we ended up w/ a 44" fish, 34 lbs. I've tried to attach a pic.
Monday we put out of Kiptopeke, and landed another 44", 36-37 lb early and had 3 others hit our eels, but didn't hook up. One of our hits again was right before dark. We messed around at the CBBT area during the late morning and early afternoon. Nothing going on there as far as we could tell.
All in all we were happy we at least caught one big. We heard of people catching more, we also heard of people not catching any. Actually met two guys from the SML area. One guy had a SML striper club hat on I think. Great guys, but I forget their names. One of them landed a 53-54 lb fish I believe.
We saw several fish come in over the 50 lb mark while we were there. Definitely a learning experience, but looking forward to going back and hopefully improving. Would love to team up next time we go if anyone is interested.
Also feel free to PM me for my two cents on details of our trip. Fish were definitely in different water depths than what I was expecting.
Here's a pic of my buddy's 36-37 lber at Chris's.
Good luck to anybody headed down!
