What a difference a few days can make... Went out on Thursday, Dec 11 with my neighbor / fishing buddy and got skunked. This was our first outing since late Oct. Had good luck Wed evening catching bait off my dock around 6:30pm - got 3-4 dozen nice ales on first throw. Too bad we could not find fish. Searched all over in several creeks and parts of main channel on Roanoke side. Fished with combination of downlines and light lines. Finally found a few hanging in trees about halfway up a creek and a downrod went down however shook the hook. Temp was 31 when we left and a little windy. Wind got worse, 15-20mph, whitecaps, cold and no fish. Called it quits around 12:30. All in all a miserable morning weather-wise. Put the light out Sun evening. Went down at 6:30pm again and nothing there. Hopes were dwindling, esp since weather forecast was much more favorable for the fisherman on Monday. However went back down at 7:45pm and they had come up. Again one throw and got around 4 dozen ales, many nice big ones. We left the dock at 7:30 this morning (Dec 15), no wind, temp around 38. Tried a different place on the Blackwater and spotted the gulls on the water. Put out downlines and planers. Ended up with 7 fish total between 8:00 and 11:30am. One small one and 6 in the 23-28" range. Kept three for dinner, released the others. Fish were scattered and mostly deep in the 40-60' range so downlines won 5 to 2 versus the light lines on planers. Warmed up quickly into the mid-40's after the sun was up higher so turned out to be a great morning. Made up for Thursday... Here are a couple of pics:
