Weather: low 30's rising to low 60's; wind 5-10 from S, cloudy in the AM turning over to mostly sunny by mid-afternoon
Water: 53-55, visibility of a few feet
Techniques: 8"-10" gizzards on freelined planers (2 bank-side, 1 channel-side) - 5/0 hooks, no stingers; "peanut" gizzards and small/medium ales on downlines (4) and light lines (2)
Got up to the lake around 8:30p on Saturday after the family Thanksgiving festivities and headed out to work off some of the multiple Thanksgiving meals by throwing the castnet. Hit a few lights in search of ales to start the day before we could chase gizzards. Ales were there but on the small side - managed to scrape together about 2 dozen medium ales with a few larger ones in the mix. Decided to check a creek for some bigger bait at night - marked a lot of bait on the sonar and threw on pods and after about 20+ throws had managed to find 6 gizzards to add to the tank - along with a couple of dozen "peanuts".
Nathan met me about 6:30 and we were fishing about 7 with a beautiful morning sky.
Marked a fair number of fish but overall they were very inactive - well, with the exception of this monster which hit a light-line ale before we even got all the baits out. It is never a good thing when you get a fish that quick.....
It was still quite frosty out so we pulled boards a while waiting for the sun to come out and melt the ice off my casting deck (and the floor of the boat and everywhere else).
We missed one fish while pulling the bank when the fish ran with the board and Nathan and I each looked at each other to see who was going to get the rod - by the time Nathan picked it up, the fish was gone Fortunately we got another chance a bit later - this one going 29" / 9 lbs. Between the miss, and a couple of baits hanging in trees we were down to just a two "big" baits.
The sun would just not escape the clouds but it finally warmed up enough that my hands would not fall off throwing the net and the front deck thawed enough that I could stand up there.... we looked and looked for big bait but could only find clouds of the small stuff....
We took a break for lunch and made a pit-stop to pick up 5 money makers that Nathan & Tyler had tucked away a couple of weeks back since the bait situation seemed dire. We tried another creek for a while without any action and then looked in yet another creek for big bait without luck so moved back to where we started the day. We found some more action on the boards but could not get the fish to the boat - twice more we were "hooked up" but about 1/2 to the boat Nathan and I each felt that horrible "pop" when the fish threw the hook, or let go of the bait or whatever that resulted in the line coming up slack....
We fished it into the sunset - just before dark bait started to come up flipping, so we spend an hour or chasing some flips and throwing on sonar blips to net about 15 baits to add back to the big tank for other dire days......
