Monday night it rained enough that I couldn't paint Tuesday morning, and I managed maybe 2 dozen smaller alewifes at 4:30 am so I went out around 6:30.
Maybe a half hour or 45 minutes after I got out, I got a good bite and it felt big to me. I tried to be sure I didn't horse it, because I'd had a line break not long ago. It dove and I got some back and it dove again and that went on for a while and I thought it ought to be about ready to come up and then it did that thing where the line goes slack all at once so I reeled in to see where the line had broke but it hadn't, so I wondered how the fish threw the hook after being on for a while, but figured at least I hadn't done too much wrong, maybe. When I went to rebait though, I found this:
These hooks are new. Nice to know that when the big one comes, my hook is going to break anyhow. Not.
Right after that I caught a 12.5 lb fish (quick release, no pic) so I figured I was on a school of decent sized fish, but then an ale wrapped itself around a twig, and I pulled up this:
A lot is said about the underwater forest, but this limb is cleanly cut off, as by a chainsaw. Someone dunked it as part of a larger fish-magnet? I guess it is falling apart now. I cleaned many yards of balled up line, a spoon, several weights and one usable hook, snapped the branches off and dumped it close to shore. So some off those U-rig eating limbs down there are not original to the lake. Can anyone legally place these things? Are there rules? Just wondering.
I was going to row back to the spot where I'd hooked two, but my phone rang and a customer wanted to meet and talk about some indoor work, so fishing was over. I should have left the phone on the dock.
