Please review and correct me where I'm wrong.
Free Line - nothing but a hook on the line with live bait drifted/trolled behind the boat Down Line - hook with live bait, 3-4' of leader, swivel, pink bead, egg sinker Light Line - I have no idea. What exactly is this?
I used to fish balloons with live bait - basically a free line, but add a balloon 6-10' above the hook. Maybe this is what some are calling a light line?
Thanks TW

Generally all have a swivel and flourocarbon leader before the hook - typical a bead above the swivel for use with inline planer boards
Freeline - no weight
Lightline - 1/8 - 1/2 oz weight
Downline - 1 - 2 or 3 oz weight - fished slow as as to keep lines as vertical as possible, usually with line counter reels so you know the depth you are presenting the bait
Downlines are usually fished straight from the rod (vs with a float or planer) but some folks do fish downlines from planers.
Freelines and lightlines can be fished straight from the rod, with planers or floats/balloons.

Do you ever need to worry about the light line going too deep? I guess the amount of line you put out is critical. Tw

Definitely - have to sort of work out the weight you are using and the speed you are pulling - and a little bit of the bait used (alewife or small juvenile gizzard vs large gizzard).

Free line: stuff I didn't pay for.
Down line: used up mono full of nicks and all stretched out.
Light line: very bright green or neon yellow.

Down line - when my jig gets snagged or wrapped on a tree in 25-30 feet of water Light line - when I decide to try and cast a 3 inch shad to the bank line and the bait flies off onto the rip rap Free line - the feeling immediately after my line breaks free, leaving a shiny new, fresh out of the box Thunderstick hanging 15 feet up in a tree at 1:00 am in the morning

And one more that some of you more seasoned gents may be familiar with - 'Shine line - the line that forms in front of the refrigerator after four of us come in from fishing at 3am.

Can we make this a sticky?

Moved this to the "How-To's" as sort of a "semi-sticky" - don't feel it is an exhaustive how-to write-up warranting a true sticky, but putting it here where there are less posts should make it easier to find....
