Greenmonster, have you ever made the pilgrimage to Harker's Island in the fall? You guys who get excited by stripers busting on the lake, DO NOT WATCH THIS, your heart won't be able to take it. youtu.be/eVU_WEcxQC8

That was awesome!!!!!!!!! I assume that buried under the mass of shark those were bonita/false albacore? Any stripers? By the way, here is our sum total catch from yesterday evening. Tough night, but decent fish. Crushed a topwater. No sign of striper all evening.

If you are really booking a trip give Flat Out and Fly Girl a call. Their clients always look like they are having fun. www.outerbanksflyfishing.com/They are false albacore fishing in that video. No stripers. The sharks are not always in the mix, but when they are, things get pretty crazy... You have this boiling mass of bait with false albacore crashing through it and sharks chomping their way through the whole party like pac-man... The false albacore get a lot less picky when they are trying to feed without getting chomped in half by a shark

It all depends on the weather... I have seen plenty of flats boats, even jon boats around Barden's Inlet (known as "The Hook") out as far as the rock jetty. Unless it is glassy calm the majority of boats stay within 3 mile or so of Barden's Inlet You won't be able to go out to the shoals (if you are sane) and won't be able to roam very far if the wind is up. Barden's Inlet is probably the safest inlet on the east coast, so you can always run back inside if it's too rough. The false albacore are often inside The Hook which is very well sheltered water. I think I went for 3 years before I was brave enough to venture any further than the rock jetty. A relevant anecdote: on one trip, the wind was howling and the seas were nasty to the point that only a few boats left the docks, much less left the inlet. One of them was a tiny little flats boat with a young guy driving and his father... We saw them out in the ocean kind of hanging near us and following us around. My buddy and I commented to each other about how crazy they were to be out there sitting on a piece of plywood with an outboard strapped to it. Turned out they were staying at the Harker's Island Fishing Center where we were too and the father ran into me that evening and asked me to please keep an eye on them the next day because he was scared. I'm going to be there Oct 25-30 and Nov 8-11. I'd be happy to give you some pointers if you decided to try it. Just know that, in the fall, the seas are very rough much more often than they are calm. You would need to have a fallback plan of looking for redfish and specks in the marsh.

That coincides with what I was thinking - If I did it it would be Nov 8-11, will have time off around then anyway. Working on my fishing buddy to go. If I do, Id love to connect and learn anything you are willing to teach. No stranger to saltwater flyfishing but FL is my stomping grounds, the NC coast would be a bit of a mystery. Been to Atlantic Beach and Beaufort, but not with my boat. Definitely got the wheels turning with that vid, though.

I use to go down there for the fall run. It is about as much fun as you can have with your clothes on. Weather can come up quick, but being watchful of weather is always smart on a boat trip. I had to make a quick exit one time, and it is tricky with shallow cuts. Plan well and keep eye out and radio on.
I run a 19' CC
Run and gun fishing at it's best. Those little tuners pull great on light tackle!

Is your username a tribute to the best restaurant on Harkers Island?

No, we camped on Harkers each time we went at a little marina, can't remember the name. We never ate a meal out. Didn't know there was such a place. I have been to Portsmouth Island, and many little places around there, never seen it.
Got the "Handle" from wearing a gold fish hook on my hat over 20 years ago, and it stuck (pardon the pun) I was a truck driver in my former life, and many people only know me by Fishhook, way before I got on the world wide web.
