Weather: extremely nice once the storm passed - low 80's / upper 70's, breeze from W for a while that laid down
Water: 83, visibility of a few feet
Techniques: downlined (4) and light lined (2) alewives
Had plans to fish with Tyler & Nathan on Sunday AM - they hit up the VA Tech football game / tailgate and then some post-game activities so I went to get bait about 10 pm - was escorted out of my creek under a shower of fireworks - got to the light - a couple of throws, including one for another boat that was at the light and I was on my way back to the dock and to bed.
Seems Tyler & Nathan were over ambitious for their Sun AM plans after a day of tailgating & evening of post-tailgating, and bailed on the morning trip somewhere around 1 am, so I slept in myself. Nathan wanted to still fish and do a evening trip - I've not fished the evening in the summer before and did to have high hopes with all the boat traffic on a holiday weekend, but figured we'd give it a try. The bait looked mostly in good shape when I checked it around mid-day - using the Prime seems to have helped - did have to toss this 8" beauty that I caught Thursday night as it finally turned "black-back" - sure wish we'd had found the right fish to put that one in front of
Tyler waived off the trip but Nathan's buddy Joel was going to drop up and go with us as well. Nathan brought his boat - the "Minnow Johnson" up and put in mid-afternoon - starting off by catching some gizzards so we could get the big tank going again before Fall fishing arrives - netted about a dozen nice gizzards and then ran on down to my place where we transferred most of the ales and headed down the lake trying to get ahead of a storm cell headed our way. Got to Tyler's place to fill the big tank and transfer the gizzards just as the storm arrived - fortunately a fast moving storm - but perfectly timed in that it ran most of the afternoon pleasure boaters off the lake - that and dropped the temperature & humidity to very nice levels.
What's at the end of the rainbow - stripers maybe?
We checked a few creeks & coves - marked a few scattered fish but never found any schools when scouting - we fished a while with one small pod of fish moving under us without any hook-up. Moved to another creek to look around but decided to head back where we started - out of nowhere a down-rod bent over with what would be the only fish of the evening.
Turns out the fish was one Tyler tagged in March of 2011 - was 21" at the time - 24.5" today - not a really good growth rate
We stuck with it until just before dark - the Minnow Johnson continues to avoid the skunk and it was a nice night on the water regardless....
