I don't know who it was, because I don't know anyone that owns a center console boat....early Sunday morning around 4am I was fishing along the rip rap between Hales Ford bridge and Waterwheel....I hear a boat coming under the bridge headed back behind Waterwheel....once it gets into view I can see (or should say can't see) there is no stern light....when the boat is past me it's like it's gone, you can't see anything of it....then after just a few minutes it comes back out running fast and stops at a dock at the mouth of the entrance to the cove....there is a dusk to dawn light on this dock and he is only there s few minutes, I figure he is getting baitfish....then he is off again, back under the bridge and gone....with everything that has gone on at the lake this past week, this is the last thing I would hope to see....

Check your friking nav lights folks - and if they don't work, stay at the dock/ramp - it's not worth it for you or any of us......

If he was close, I would have lite him up with a spot light. Or maybe an aircraft landing light...will trolling motor batteries handle the current draw??

There's idiots like that everywhere. I was out one night at 1am and some jackass was out on a sea doo with zero lights. I've come close to killing a couple people at night bc their lights were non existent. I don't know how I'd live with myself. I remember one night Travis was behind us and luckily we saw a cell phone light on some idiots in a canoe sitting in the middle of the channel. Travis said it was a good thing we slowed down bc he'd have run him over. It makes me not want to boat at night, which I don't as much anymore except for bait but that's a short well lit run.

Is the relatively cheap radar like Lowrance offers useful for detecting canoes etc on the lake? Seems like it would be difficult to use in close quarters like above hales ford

Seems like it would be difficult to use in close quarters like above hales ford Yes - the Lowrance Broadband 3G & 4G radars can pick up small objects well - it will mark channel markers really well due to the signal reflection from the metal signs on the markers but it can also clearly mark plastic buoys so a canoe or paddleboat should be no problem. The broadband radar actually excels in close quarters as the target resolution is excellent - assuming you've zoomed in your range and are not flying through the area at 50 mph. Also, if you add a heading sensor (Lowrance Point-1 for $200 is a combo GPS receiver & heading sensor), you an overlay the radar on your chart screen which gives great situational awareness. Situations like described above is exactly the reason I bought one (and bought a 2nd when I f-ed up and crushed the 1st in the lift.... ) - but yes, my safety and others safety was worth that much to me. I will say if you get one, that it is another layer in your awareness - while it is really good, I would not 100% rely on it - like you'd not rely on any one system, and I still keep my speeds reasonable when running at night, but I will always have it on at night and keep my eyes moving between the radar screen & the water itself - and if I have a 2nd person on board, have them keeping their eyes on the water the full time. I will say that I will almost always see a boat visually before the radar picks it up - but of course that's only when its daytime, or the boat has nav-lights on. Its those idiots out there without lights in the channel that I have the radar for..... Oh, and it does help me get a jump on the morning in the fall when the lake is fogged in

Was it a smaller CC like a 16-18 footer with no T-Top? I had a CC do the same thing a couple months ago in the same area. Even in my kayak on the rare occasion I go out on SML at night I have a super bright light on thats visible from a far distance 360 degree that o keep on at all times.

Might have been an 18'er, no smaller though...don't know about the T-Top.
