Kinda new at SML night fishing. Picked a spot on Vista Point with very deep water that comes up very quick. Anchored in maybe 40' of water and with a slight breeze the boat would move into 25' or so and when the breeze let up we moved out deeper again. Put out a light and fished downrods and freelines cast out. Loads of bait moved in and we wound up catching 4 fish in the 23 to 24 in range all on the downrods. We really are not confident in our methods but we did catch a few. SML seems very different to us and I'm not sure bringing our tactics from other lakes to SML is the best thing. Without marking fish I am very reluctant to fish in the very deep water but maybe I should be. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

try casting artificial topwater and large minnow baits at the banks at night. ya kind of pull up on some spots and listen for activity, or cast the banks in areas that have been holding fish..... in essence, fish shallow at night...

I've been doing live bait at night and marking striper down 60 feet here at Claytor, but I haven't tried going shallower. Should I be running down lines in less than 30 feet of water at night?

We have never had much success live bait fishing more than 30 ft deep, even at Claytor. Haven't done a lot of night fishing but what we have done tells me the fish don't mind coming shallow to take the bait. What I will do though, if I mark them is put the bait down to whatever.
