Thanks !

I think what you're asking is akin to what's best a Ford or Chevy? I personally think Lowrance is the best on the market and since Navico purchased them their structure is assured for a long time. Lowrance support is topnotch as well. However, I've seen the Hummingbird's operate and they seem to be as good, not aware of their support etc.

Hummingbird really helped themselves when they bought out BottomLine a few years ago, they really upgraded their units, I have one but most likely in the next year or so will upgrade in and most likely go to Lowrance, which I have used for a number of years before. Go into the stores and look at the different units and play with them and then buy.

Wow, that's pretty cool Yam! It looks like one side of your net is a little light.

Wow, that's pretty cool Yam! It looks like one side of your net is a little light. Now you made me think! And I think I get it! For downscan a thinner beam is shot than traditional sonar which provides more clarity. I am thinking it's like having more pixels on an HD TV. However some movement is required or the picture will be funky. In the shots above, the angles of the nets result from the boat moving forward and the net dropping. And if you really think about it..the resulting picture is a mirror or backwards image. That is, as the net just enters the sonar cone, the very right of the net becomes the very left of the picture. As the net then drops, this pattern continues until the net is no longer in the sonar cone. Moving forward while taking thin sliced shots of something dropping will always result in this type of angle. And I guess the faster something drops, the steeper the angle. Right? Sonar is a mental puzzle.

The downscan has a 2.5 degree beam slice spread over 60 degrees. I do not think you can get a perfect picture of your net unless you increase your speed combined with a much slower falling net. The ones I have seen on the internet were shot by another boat. I have multiple shots similar to what you guys have taken but all are missing 1/2 or so of the net. Certainly have got me interested in trying it some more. Lol.

What would you expect it to look like if you were sitting perfectly still?

What would you expect it to look like if you were sitting perfectly still? Probably nothing with the narrow cone since you'd throw the net away from the boat - But if you did catch it in the cone you'd get an imagine doing down right to left but likely more smudged The images are so good you think they are a photo snapshot but we forget the are lots of discrete looks down - put together over time - and the net is sinking over time as the screen scrolls from right to left - so the image starts higher in the water column on the left as that's where it was in past time and lower in the water column on the right as that's where it is in more recent time

At least that is the only way it makes sense to me.
