On the pre-HDS units you could zoom in and then scroll up/down in the water column in order to watch a specific depth range that you might be interested in - useful when you know fish are holding between a specific range of water depth. On the HDS, when you press Zoom In, it zooms, but locks the view to the bottom. If you scroll "up" to you can view a specific set of water, but the screen is frozen as you are looking at the history buffer. I was surprised that you could not do the same as the old LCX units, and figured the capability had to be burred in there somewhere. I recently ran across a video that shows how to watch a specific depth range of water. The key is to manually set the range, but instead of selecting one of the pre-set depts (i.e. 20 ft, 50ft, 100ft, etc), you select "Custom" and then you can set an upper and lower limit. Now you are allocating your full vertical pixel resolution to displaying the data the unit is seeing within that range, allowing for better detail to be displayed. Maybe this was obvious to everyone else, but I can be a little slow at times.... Hopefully this tip helps someone along the way.... if you have a good tip on using your sonar, please post it up and share...
