Planning a 10 day trip to Lake Nantahala in western NC the second week of June to do some Kokanee Salmon fishing. Yes, you read that right salmon fishing in NC. Thought I would try a few lakes in the area (Chatuge, Nottely). Any help with these lakes? As usual I will be fishing artificial.

I think you are wasting your time. All the nc guys come to SML, so I am pretty sure there are no fish in NC.

Thought I would try a few lakes in the area (Chatuge, Nottely). Any help with these lakes? As usual I will be fishing artificial. I belive Lake Hiawassee is close to these lakes you mention. It's a dream lake. I stayed there for a month a few years back. Every morning we would go to the dam and wait for the guy to turn her on. We could actually wave to the guy and see him smile at us. Not another soul during the weekdays on this lake. All national forest, 26 miles long. Every morning a yellow school bus would drive over the dam and stop and talk to us for a bit. Once the dam was on, a strong current was produced and the bait fish and monster smallies would go nuts! The water is 200 feet in this location but the smallies were on the surface like sharks. All you had to do was wait for a smallie to stun a bait, throw your blue bomber lure close and when the fish would come back for his meal, bamm... You were on! We would catch 10-15 smallies and various other bass every morning from 3-6 pounds. The largest was 7. One weekend, another boat was there and couldn't catch anything and watched us do our thing. I then gave the guy one of my lures and 10 minutes later he landed a 28 pound striper. We never caught a striper the whole month. Weird..but we did catch some walleye and various other fish. The TVA lakes are awesome!

I have family that have a seasonal place in Murphy and they are quite familiar with Hiawassee. We only fished for the walleyes when I fished it a few years back. The NC striper record came from Hiawassee(66 pounds I think) not bad for a lake that doesn't get stocked with stripers. thanks

The NC striper record came from Hiawassee(62 pounds I think) not bad for a lake that doesn't get stocked with stripers. thanks Not bad for a kid that was bass fishing with a Zoom worm, huh I guess that shows you what a cool mountain lake that does not get a lot of fishing pressure for striper can produce when a few slip into the system ;

That's awesome you have been there. My son was born Feb 29, 2012. We were there from late May through June. That waterfall in that special cove is a very special place!

One of the biologists commented that fishermen want more fish stocked but that is the exact opposite of what needs to be done if you want monster stripers. Interesting.

Less new fish, less harvesting fish and less pressure would definitely help other lakes.
