Quick note from a discussion I had with Dan from Dannco. His feeling on Rule pumps is that they are not as good anymore because they moved their plant out of country. He mentioned his friends in industry are replacing cartridges at an accelerated rate. As a result, his new "goto" pump is either sureflow or tsunami.
I found this interesting. USA bias or truth?
He also commented that his sizing table is wrong and that he does recommend a 500gph for a 30 gallon tank rather than an 800 as shown in his sizing table.

I have found all pumps now suck, but Rule has a three year warranty. Send it in with receipt and they send you a new one. I still think a Rule 500 manual pump is one of the best. Rules automatic pumps with the chip in them are terrible..stay away from them. The Tsumani I had was gawd awful. I've never used a sure flow.
A 500gph pump is more than enough for a 30gal tank.

I have tsunamis on my boat for the bilge and live well pump. No problems yet. I do plan to create a recirc in my existing tank with a Dannco venturi. Walmart has a kit with everything (thruhull fittings screen, tube, etc.) you need including the 500 tsunami pump for 29 bucks. Hard to beat that. I am guessing that adding air at the bottom with recirc will add a bit of spice to the mongos in the cooler months if doing an open loop. Of course, once I get the sbtii, I doubt I will use it. I just need to modify something! Or maybe I can use my live well as a holding tank for crappie? Or, I could always aireate the bottles of beer that will eventually be in my live well.

Regardless of what you use, keep a spare on the boat - I keep a spare Rule 500 on the boat for when mine eventually dies - won't help me if it dies in the middle of the night, but usually you get some advance warning via squealing of the pump for a while - and it is easy enough to do a swap on the water if need be.....
Yam - for something like you describe, a cartridge pump may be a good idea - easier to swap it out later.
