Hello all, I'm a long time lurker who finally decided I should join the forum. I usually fish the James in and around Richmond for smallies so I'm a little out of my element trying to figure out the best trolling techniques. So far I've mostly been donating U-rigs to the trees but I have managed to have some luck night fishing off of the bank with live shad and throwing topwater early morning. I've been coming to the lake just about every year since I was a kid and been out on the Shad Taxi a couple of times, and based on what I saw Todd doing and what I've read on here so far it seems like big shad on planer boards tight to the bank is the way to do it. My family got a place mid-lake (closest channel marker is R24) in October, and now that we're done with all of the work it needed I'm looking forward to spending more time fishing and learning the most effective patterns on SML. Thank you all for sharing tips and tricks and such, it's really helped me get started fishing for stripers.

Techniques vary across the year - big shad on the banks in the creeks is a early spring / spring pattern - as we transition into late spring and summer the fish move deeper following the bait. A lot of the fish are being caught now out on main channel points or even deeper - fishing light-lines with medium gizzards or alewife. As summer pushes in and temps warm more, it will be mostly a downlined alewife pattern.
Lots of good info in the reports section and the general striper section on the board - sounds like you've been watching and reading those along the way - post us your experiences - good or bad - as we all can learn as much from the tough days on what did not work as what did....
