If anyone has any tips on catching a bass out of this lake, please for the love of God share. I've been skunked two days in a row. Not even a single bite. I've fished every area, threw every bait in the boat. And nothing. If be thrilled to catch a bluegill. I usually can catch fish everywhere I go, but apparently not here. Losing my mind

Smith can be a fickle mistress man, join the club of frustrated bucketmouth chasers. Ive personally had luck with weightless zoom super flukes texas rigged and fished slow around blow downs, overhanging trees and undercut banks the last couple weeks. Shakey heads and drop shotting are two other methods that produce well especially around docks. I tend to stay up the creeks and rivers where the water has a little more color than the main lake and a jig fished around downed trees in stained water can be the skunk cure. Hope this helps (and makes sense)

As you guys know I'm no bass fisherman other than when a big girl grabs one of our big shad , but I'd have to think that 300-400 some boats running around throwing to the same points one after another after another the last couple days with the pre-fishing for the Oakley can't help the bite. Watched one after another roll up on and throw to the same point in our creek this am. I seriously started thinking about going down and selling coffee and donuts to pay for all the gas I burned running around chasing the stripers the last couple of days

HAHA! Yeah thats definitely not going to help matters, and the optimist tourny next weekend, I think I'm gonna pass on the bass fishing for a couple weeks at the lake, might be time for some crappie or a trip to philpott.

I just saw in BASSMASTER magazine that Smith Mountain is ranked #30 in the country for bass fishing...above average numbers and size

I feel your pain. Fished for two days caught 6, all small. Caught three on crank baits. Those are the only bass I've caught on crank baits all spring. They were nothing to write home about. I had been having good luck with shaky heads on docks but that seems to be drying up. I love to fish flukes on lay downs but the wind has made that very hard this spring as well. Your not alone in your frustration.

What color of fluke do you usually throw? I threw a double fluke rig all day and never had one look at it. I was using glimmer blue. Would I be better off going with more of a shad color? And what type of crank bait did you catch them on? I'd be excited to catch some small ones! Tomorrow is my last day here

I am by far no expert at bass fishing or any other. I had good luck last spring with the Strike King XD model crankbaits, gizzard shad color, black top, silver/white sides. I have a 5 or 6XD, than 10XD that will run 20' deep. When the spawn was in, I Texas rigged soft plastic worms a lot. Mostly banks to 8 FOW. That's my pitiful 2 cents!

The key to fishing this lake is light line. On your texas rigs, shacky head and drop shot or any other finesse bait. I use 6 to 8 pound fluro unless i am fishing up the river and i will switch up to 10. Also for crank baits anything shad colored.

Late winter early spring, through a # 7 shad rap. spring is jig time, late spring throw a shakey head, summer c-rig deeper points, fish the docks with a shakey head, fall is the schooling bite, chrome or clear zara spook jr. thrown at busting bass will result in explosive blowups. Shad are spawning now, find shad on a bank and throw a spinner bait, I do best slow rolling it.If the shad are running your bait back to the boat your doin it right, be patient the fish are there.Silver blades and a translucent shad looking shirt. Terminator.

What brand, color, size do you typically use with the shakey head? I have heard this method works really well but have not been able to get a rig together that i'm confident to fish with. Typically i just texas rig wite flukes and have had luck with the green pumpkin and baby bass flukes. Other than that, X-rap seem to do the trick early in the spring. Would really like to expand my tackle to use on SML and any advise on preparing a good shakey head rig would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
