I now recognize that the faster you move through an area and can actually read you sonar, the better chance you have at seeing actual fish archs without scaring them off. If I don't see this, then I look for bait. If no bait.. I then definitely move on. My favorite situation is minimal bait but schools of fish! I found this during the 50 mph winds a few weeks back! Man that was fun! I have also noticed a correlation between not caring and finding fish. That is, the more I don't care about actually finding fish, the better the chance that I will. Finally, if there is a lot of bait in a particular area, I am confident that I will catch fish there if I stay with it. In other words, I don't run everywhere. Well that is unless the birds are out in November/December. I will run 20 miles to chase birds cause I like that type of rush!

This time of year when the fish are up on the banks in 5' or less of water its hard to know whats there unless you have side scan maybe. The deeper the fish the easier to scout. I just kinda know where the fish should be meaning up on the banks, flats, or points for the time of year. If i see a spot that i feel should hold fish im gone make atleast 1 pass through. Found a spot in a creek 2 yrs ago that I had been overlooking for a few years, just never thought about going over there and checking it out. Turns out it is a small shallow flat about 4' deep and maybe 35yrds wide in a turn of the creek. Ive been catching stripers consistently there since then in the spring and fall and is one of my best flathead spots in the summer. Ive found several good striper spots while flathead fishing come to think of it...... mmmm flatheads.....almost time to get on em!

Right now I just fish. I look at bait and water temps and just go off experience mainly. I dont waste time if nothing is there..fish, move, fish move. Even if I'm catching fish, I'll move from an area pretty quick if the bite slows. you cant stay in one area too long unless there are lots of fish. I'll look for areas that are warming up faster than nearby water and have good forage...generally you will find stripers nearby. This year was a little late, but once the bait moved up, the fish were right behind them. The shallow bite started up lake much earlier this year than mid lake due to water temps. The lower lake is still pretty cool in places due to the clarity. The stained water warmed up much faster which improved the bite up lake I think.

I'd like to say that I try to combine what Tyler (bentrod), Shadslinger (hunter), and Yam said. That is, for this time of year and for what mood / time frame I'm dealing with.
