Has anyone fished the Staunton yet? I know the striper ain't made it very far up yet because of this crazy weather. Has anyone been to 360 or Staunton river state park and tried them yet?

Ive always been told to "wait til the Dogwoods bloom" before hitting the Staunton for stripes. There may be some hanging out at the mouth but almost certain they havnt started to move yet

Yea me to, I'm sure I'll be the first to know when they get here. I live within walking distance from the Staunton in brookneal. I was just wondering if anyone had tried them yet.

Cool, I was wondering if Leo was still on here I ain't seen him posting anything. We have talked on here a lot in the past. I'm going to make sure we meet in person this year. I can tell he is a real good ol boy. I was hoping to meet some of yall last year but I didn't get to spend as much time on the water as id like to have. My total fish count last year was only 133 "stripers" and I caught almost half of them the Saturday night of the tournament in the rocks.

If you wait for the Dogwoods you have waited too long. Go now and Walleye fish, you will know when the bucks show up. Leo is a good ole boy, I hear he takes after his younger brother!

Yea the dogwoods ain't always right. I've been fishing this river for years. Most the time I'll pick a few bucks up while fishing for white bass. I've seen some dogwoods bloom on the river bank but I don't know what that weather yesterday did to them. I'm just hoping all the stripers come up the Staunton this year and stay away from the Dan river.

I think it was just old timer info being passed down. I did some diggin. Most studies put the dogwoods at April 15th or so...thats 3 weeks away...you think that will be too late with current weather trends?

Should be in full swing by then, temps gone warm up this weekend and that water temp should rise on up. striper tournament is usually the last weekend of april and shortly after they gone...normally

The old timers are right, when the dogwoods bloom the fish are generally there. BUT, those who wait for the dogwoods to bloom miss a lot of good fishing, sometimes the best of it.

Nice thread going here. I have never fished the Staunton River but it has always intrigued me. Do you float it or can you use a lake boat? Where are the ramps and such?

Its true, if u wait on the dogwoods to bloom just to fish u have missed at least 2 schools of fish. In the years past the stripers have been here by now because we ain't had the cold weather we have had this year. That is a big reason why they are spawning during or short after the tournament in the past few years. And its a lot more water flow this year to.
Gator, a lake boat would not be a good idea in the upper part of the Staunton. On a good day with the water level up maybe 360 bridge witch is pretty much the mouth of buggs island. I fish brookneal area mainly the rocky part and if you are just a first timer to that part of the river you really want to have someone who knows "The Rocks" before you take a boat up there. "The Rocks" are from brookneal boat ramp up above the bridge. I have seen a few to many props took off and even holes in the sides of boats just because some people think a jet drive can fly or something...
Buzzard.

Way too many depth changes and obstacles for me...mainly big rocks.Ive seen a few flat bottom boats with trolling motors or small outboards over the years but you have to have someone "work" the motor to keep it continually out of harms way.
