to add to what mward said the lens quality is better in the black over the silver. You can use the wifi app from either apple or andriod and I have done this on numerous occasions. One a note of that though you have to turn on wifi of course on your phone which drains your phone battery pretty quick. so if you are going to use the gopro wifi remote you might as well as get the black version since it would cost more i think to get the silver then buy the remote separate.

The benefit of the iPhone / Android app however (over the wifi remote) is that you can "see" what the camera "sees" on the app - and this frame your shot properly - can't do this with the wifi remote and since the camera does not have a display screen (unless you add the LCD Backpac) the app over wifi is your only way to see what you are capturing.

I had to use the battery backpack with my Black... I like to film 1080 30 fps and it was killing my battery by lunch even just turning it on and off filming clips, not trying to record continuously... Then when I'd switch batts, I'd get humid air in the case and the first wave that splashed it or the first time I dunked it, condensation would form on the lens and the rest of the footage that day would be garbage.
Now I use the battery backpack and button the camera up in an air conditioned room with some desiccant strips and quickspit on the lens.

I have found my WiFi remote and phone app to be more trouble than they are worth. They kill your battery too quick. Your best bet is to just get a feel for what the camera will see when you point it at something. The wide angle makes this rather easy to do. Just takes some getting used to.

I use the app to "frame" the shot - make sure I have what I want - then I turn off the app AND turn off wifi on the camera and manually record to maximize battery life

Anyone using the black and have it lock up ? Its happened several times to me and the only way to reset it is to remove the battery.

Heard of that with the 3 Black - have you updated the software?

I use the app to "frame" the shot - make sure I have what I want - then I turn off the app AND turn off wifi on the camera and manually record to maximize battery life The app is also nice for quickly sending pics or frames or even video snipits to friends. However, when on the water, just getting the camera on at the right time is tough when trying to manage a spread. I thought the remote would be the answer but if the WiFi blue light is on for a period of time ...say bye bye to your battery. My procedure now is once I see the slightest of action I turn on the camera. Then I have to wait a moment or two to start video. Can be a hassle but I love the extra challenge. I then use the app at night to create my reports quickly before I pass out from exhaustion. Never thought I would say this...But I can't wait for Autumn fishing!

Yam I agree its a timing nightmare but I use the setting to start recording on power up. Saves me the hassle of pushing a second button when you don't have time
