Greetings,
With all this DIY home tank stuff my wheels are a turning. I would love to be able to focus primarily on fishing, especially if I can catch bait in the peak times and keep em alive through the leaner months. I recognize that many of you are on or very close to the lake so transporting is a nonissue...but what about for us less fortunate folk? Are there any safe ideas in transporting bait to and from the lake. It seems like they would be under a ton of stress from catching them..holding them, transporting, then holding, then back to transporting, then fishing...but...figured Id ask. I live about 30 miles from Leesville .
Thanks!

Piper - I know guys in other states that have big home tanks and transport shad/alewive/blueback all the time - they will go catch bait, bring them home in their boat tank and then put them in the home tank - then when time to go fishing they put them in the boat tank and go....
Keeping handling to a minimum is key - the whole way through the process. If you are going to keep them for a long time it is best to net and drop them straight into your tank - not bang around on the deck and knock scales off - once the start loosing scales its downhill.
When catching to bring back home - its best to focus on a bait-trip - or maybe catch it right at the end of your fishing outing and then boogie straight home - don't let them spend any more time in your boat tank than that have to.....
You can also use "Tranqil" to slow them down from beating each other up so bad in the transport tank - not sure if you really need it though - and a little goes a LONG way with that stuff.
Also, its good practice not to put bait from your tank after a fishing outing back into the home tank.....

Thanks Mike, I guess my concern was the amount of "sloshing" going on in the boat tank. I have a 55 gallon drum that I usually fill with about 35 gallons or so. If I leave any water in it after fishing I can see it sloshing and splashing out as I go down the road. I can only imagine what that will be like with fish inside.. I do have a lid that Im figuring out a way to attach/detatch in a effective manner but as of right now it just sits in hopes it wont blow off

I've caught shad in Greensboro in the am at our city lake and brought them up to SML on several occasions. The lake warden lets me leave the boat trailer in the water since nobody is around in the winter. I catch the bait right around the marina and load the boat. They are pretty hardy when the water is cold. I use a Super Bait Tank.

Ive transported in a 55 gallon drum without issue but that was just around the lake area. Took me about 30 minutes on average. I dont have any sloshing out of the tank problems. Did you cut the top completely open? I only cut a small rectangle in the top of mine basically big enough to get my net in and out. I can fill it 3/4 full and drive down the road and not spill a drop

Ty for the encouraging words. I don't cuss much but for some reason the throw net makes me vulgar..My buddy prepares himself each time I grab the thing with ear plugs...
