Greetings, Hit the lake for a few hours...was really looking forward to the sunny 51 degrees that ultimately turned into cloudy 41 and me freezing my arse off. Put in just after daybreak..Water temps around 39-41...Located a bunch of bait in the main channels and in some creeks. Actually saw a number of decent "balls" ALL of it was in 40+ foot of water until 10:30 or so. Saw some scattered schools getting pushed up around 10:30 but they stayed up for maybe 10 minutes. Looked like the big boys were pushing them into the banks. Saw this several times.Of course I didnt think about dropping the throw net and tossing some artificial until they were done. Threw the net for 3 hours and caught 1 gizzard in 35 foot of water. Pulled my 1 bait throughout the main channel and back into some creeks. Marked some fish..including some that appeared to be into a school of shad. Nervous bait but no bites. Closed the day out with my dog finding a skunk after dark and getting partially sprayed..hows that for a day of fishing

Dang - you (well, your dog) truly got skunked...... Big bait is not going to work well with the temps in the 30's and very low 40s...... best off going with small "peanuts" or alewives or artificial. ALWAYS keep that casting rod nearby for the moment when you see breaking fish. Same thing happened to me this fall - I was up the lake looking for bait when I spotted some fish chasing back up and down the bank - I slid in there - tossed a swimbait into them and hooked up with one or two. Sure takes the monotony out of throwing the net
