Guys - FYI, I heard from Toby @ Outcast - he said his prime-time production season for planers is summer as he gets real busy in the Fall through spring - though he is gearing up to start production on a few boards and then will be cranking out larger #s during the summertime. He asked folks to be patient as he makes them a set at a time out of his garage.....

I use and own both the water bugz and out casts. The outcasts will out work the water bugz hands down. Outcasts pull farther out than the waterbugz. Anything bigger thasn a light lighned alewive and the waterbugz will struggle big time. As for using a planner buard with down lines. I've done it with an outcast but dont run them very wide and Ive only done it to give some space between my lines to keep them from tangaling. Another option if you cant find the outcast's is when Dwayne opens back up at Captains Quarters he sells the Redneck plainer boards. Which are not outcasts but will work better than the waterbugz Are you using the single or double foam waterbugz? Seems like the opinions very quite a bit.

The striper addiction boards arrived yesterday. These are little larger then the water bugs and look really nice. I will say, both the line clip as well as the swivel will need to be upgraded but at his price I'm very satisfied...now the wait to test them on Friday.

I did test out the water bugs on sunday. Wow it was windy as hell . I realize this is not a fair time to assess but I wanted to try them out. I see exactly what you guys are describing as far as planing out to the side. These would be better for more in line rods as I can only get them slightly of the corner of the boat. I did need some time to get the speed right with the wind blowing so hard. 1 of my battery died so I was stuck with limiTed trolling motorI had to use my outboard which really sucks and was too fast

I use 8 rods out the back, two up front. Since I already have 4 waterbugz boards, here's how I use my setups. The two up front are downlines, and from left to right in the rear this is my typical setup: Striper addiction, waterbugz, waterbugz, freeline, downline, waterbugz, waterbugz, striper addiction. The line that gets hit most is the freeline straight out the back.

Sounds great Sutor...how much freeline do you let out? Any weight?

I typically let out around 60ft. on my freeline. And no the free lines don't have any weight on them. Although I have used 1/4oz egg sinkers when I am using a smaller bait on that line, because it has a harder time spooling out. Normally I will keep from no weight to 3/8oz. egg sinkers on my planer boards, and 1.5oz. on my downlines. But keep in mind I do most of my fishing at Lake Anna. (Not that I think that really makes a difference.)

Piper..we caught our 25 pound fish with a single foam waterbugz and we were running a large spread and big bait. For me..the waterbugz can handle any bait.
My buddy then got some double foams. No doubt these look better as they sit higher but don't seem to add much value.
I then purchased some rednecks and will never use waterbugz again. They are more visible, easier to work as they do the work for you, easier to turn with, able to be pulled in white caps, and handled a 3 oz weight with a mongo. I also like a bigger board for my bigger hand.

Sweet man..I actually bought something similar to the rednecks as well..Only thing lacking was the POS line clip they had installed couldnt handle braided line. I agree about the Waterbugz. They seem very functional but require a bit more work where the bigger ones begin working once they hit the water. MAN I want to nail a 25lber.. My largest (ever) is 14 lbs.

My largest ever before late October was 11. Then I came to SML where an 11 pounder has become a decent fish.
On my very first trip here..I put my boat in at Hardy with my wife and kid and a guy at the ramp said. "Are you going fishing?" He said it with a wild look in his eye. Crack addict like with a side of country hospitality.
I told him I wasn't but asked him where is good this time of year? He said.."tressle to tressle!“
The next weekend my ass was up at 2am and I arrived at the ramp and was in the water just as light was showing. My heart was pounding..it was calm, the morning was crisp. And as I slow motored under the bridge I saw what I thought were two bass fishermen. As I slowly went past, one guy hollered at me with that "I know how to fish" country voice...he said "Hey man..their breaking right over here...come on and get ya one!"
So I turned off my big motor, dropped my TM and about got on plane to get over there. I had my pole ready with my spoon... and bamm...explosion. So I threw at it but my lure snapped off my line due to a tangle from travel and my adrenaline filled haste.
Wow I was embarrassed but picked myself up with the fastest retie in history including a new leader. And as soon as I was ready..more splashes! And on the first cast..I landed a 12 pounder as I watched the other two boats landing fish. A group of strangers collaborating as if they had been friends for years.
And now I am like that guy I met at the ramp.
So Piper.. What I am really trying to say is..."Are you sure you want to catch a 25 pounder?"
