hello to everyone. I am new to the forum, my name is Mark and I live in Vinton. I lived at the lake many moons ago and have just now gotten back into fishing. I have read a bunch of the posts on the forum and there seems to be a lot of really good information. I just got a boat in early November, four trips out now and no fish yet. I hope to be able to post some fish pictures at some point, boat is really starting to smell skunky .

Welcome mfix - hang in there - ask questions here on the forum - lots of helpful folks..... join in the fun and don't think you do not have anything to contribute - post up reports even when the skunk rides along - often there are things to be learned by others and yourself as well from it...... Also, post up a pic of your rig in the Show Us Your Rig section so we'll recognize you when out on the water.... smlfishingforums.proboards.com/board/26/show-rig

I will hang in there, being on the water makes my day, catching fish is just icing on the cake. My son (11) learned to throw crank baits on New Years Day, he did not catch a thing but had a GREAT time. We will catch some fish, it all comes down to time on the water .

Welcome to the forum, like Mike said read the old posts, and put time in on the water. If you can hire one of the local guides.

I don't discriminate when it comes to fish, whatever is biting at the time works. Since my boat purchase in early November I have been targeting Stripers. I have been using artificial bait, mostly a white zoom fluke, but also some spinnerbaits with no luck. In the fall I was fishing with friends for largemouth, managed a first of catching a turtle on a spinnerbait. During the summer I was fishing at Carvins cove for bass and catfish from the bank. In the spring it was top-water at night for stripers with some success.

which side of the lake are you fishing?
Best tip I can give anyone to get their kid casting good and keep them for fishing for monkeys in the trees is to place 5 gallon buckets in the yard and make them cast to them (take hooks off of lures, put a lead weight on the line, or just put a big bobber on the line). This is how I would have Barret practice when he was little. When he gets good at that then put the buckets under a table or small trees in the yard so that he has to develope even better skills.
