Lights on trailer been giving me trouble so I rewired it with lights on trailer poles. Hooked it up to my wife's truck and everything works perfect. Hook it up to my truck and everything works except the running lights. Blows the fuse in the truck. thought my problems were with the trailer wiring but appears to be the truck. I have the round 7 way female receptacle on the truck. I've replaced everything except this receptacle. It does have a little corrosion on the prongs. Going to replace this today. If that doesn't work, I have no idea how to diagnose the problem. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm assuming here that your truck has been used to pull the trailer before and it's wired identical to your wife's truck. If you have a meter you can test each output plug on the truck. I found a diagram on line for my particular plug type and then just ran and electrical check from the plug side that the trailer connector plugs into. This website is really good and shows just about all plugs types and connections. www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/TrailerLights.html

Striperjohn, thanks for the reply. I tested it and each time I touch the running lights plug with the 12V source the fuse blows in the truck. Any idea how to find the source of the short?

What kind of truck? Is it factory trailer harness or aftermarket? Do you have yellow turnsignal lenses or is the brake/tail/turn in the same bulb? Most common concern is aftermarket diode packs that convert seperate turn, brake and tail lamps to work the trailer lights.

Got it fixed. I finally gave up after rewiring the trailer(at which point the lights worked with my wife's truck hooked up), then replaced the connector on the truck. Lights still didnt work. took the Excursion to a trailer place and it turns out the new connector I put on the truck was no good! Guy put another one on and bingo-good to go.

Hey dog, get yourself on of those plug in testers, they're like 15.00 at most trailer places. You plug it into either the boat side or the truck side and it has leds that tell you where the problem lies. THEN, LOL, of course you have to trace and find it. These things can be a PIA. I think we've all had problems at one time or another with trailer wiring. Cheers, John
