Fascinating data...if the charts are a representative of a true trend it looks like we,re in an upswing for the next few years..thanks for sharing

I'm not sure I draw anything trending overly positive here - yes, the hrs/catch for the fish <30" has been coming down, but that for fish over 36" went up in 2012. And what you'll see looking at the bar charts of fish caught per size over past years is the fact that they are bunching up around 28" or so and we're having a hard time getting larger numbers over 30"
Of course, all of this is drawn from about 20 diaries over the last few years - though as I understand it, from approximately the same group of anglers, which I guess is good in it should provide some consistency in terms of experience, how they fish, etc.
So, is the bunching up of data a result of the set of anglers turning in diaries being a particular group that by nature of their fishing techniques or such tending to on average catch fish under 30" Or is it truly a factor that the fish are not growing (seeming to be supported by growth data we have), and there are less and less big fish out there due to harvesting... We desperately need more data flowing in - so take the time to tally your diary and submit - and if you didn't keep records in 2013, resolve to do so in 2014!

Not only is the diary a great tool for science it also gives me info that I can use for the following years. In addition to the diary I have added (for my own info) entries of were the fish are caught, what the WT is, the type and color of lure and the depth. I keep this separate from the spread sheet that Dan requires. I think its a good reference for years to come. Lets all do our part to maintain this incredible fishery.

Good insight mward. . The trend i was referencing was that info early on in which growth rate numbers went up and down and now appear to be going up. As far as fish size i think its neat to see the amount of large fish caught and released.I do realize as you mentioned we're talking 20 guys out of 100s that fish the lake and aren't familiar with data collection or do they care to contribute. Love the idea...hope to contribute in 2014

Just one last reminder - the cut-off for submitting diaries is the end of January - if you have them - even if partial, please get them to Dan before the end of the month.....

Just got this info and it is kind of sad given all of us that enjoy the striper fishery on SML. I guess when we had the fish-kill we also lost the folks that used to help collect and turn in this info...... Year

Remember - you can get a diary book just by dropping an e-mail to Dan and he'll mail one out to you - or let me know and I'll help get you one..... Or, you can use the spreadsheet version (attached to the 1st post in this thread) and e-mail that to Dan at the end of the year.....

I will be up on the lake all weekend, and can bring a few diaries up if you tell me you want one and are willing to meet up on the water somewhere.

All - just a reminder - it is that time of year to dig out your diary and make sure you have it filled in with all your trips from 2014 and then get it mailed in to Dan Wilson / DGIF (or if you still have some fishing to do between now and the end of year, make a note to send it in 1st week of the year). It's important that we get this info in to DGIF so that they can use it to help monitor the state of the striper fishery. And remember - there is a cash "bounty" for submitting your diary.... it's not large but it certainly more than covers your postage and a bit of time to fill it all out....

I meant going forward. My buddy and I are just learning how to fish with live bait- hopefully this will allow us to fish year round- so I will actually have something to record on a diary. Thanks !
