Just wondering if you guys think that line counters is a must have for live bait (planers and downlines) I have quite a few abu garcia 7000i's and some cheapo shakespeare tidewaters that I mainly keep rigged up for big catfish. Spooled up with 30lb. test and 50lb. leaders. When I switch off from striper and catfishing I have to change leaders, plus the big winches are a little overkill for most of the stripers. And I also like to keep less lb. test line on if possible. So, I'd like to get some striper trolling rigs so that I have an arsenal solely for landlocked stripers.
Anyways I also have a nice abu 6500c3 on a 6'6" graphite rod that I use for jigging, spooning, and top water. It is a great reel, but due to the price and the fact that it doesn't have a line counter I am not sure if I want to get 5-7 more of them. Was looking at the Daiwa accudepth and the Okuma Magda MA20. I can get sets of these relatively cheap. Line counters or no? Any other reels that you guys would look into for group purchasing? That being said, I am just looking for some opinions. Thanks fellas.

Lots of the Okuma Magda's used and they are pretty economical. The drags can be a little hit & miss - sticky at times. I'm not a big Daiwa fan but they are probably OK as well. I've been using Abu 6500LC's which so far I like for downlines. Shimano seems to make the best stuff that holds up the longest, but they are pricier than the other options.
You don't need line counters on your planer boards, or light-lines (on light-lines it can help, but I usually just do measured pulls to put it out) - but for downrods its almost a must - you can do measured pulls to set them down, but I find a lot of time needing to reel up to avoid a tree, or changing depths, and then you basically would have to reel all the way up and drop back down. I know at least one guy using colored braid for downrods and keeping track that way.... it's an option I guess.

Thanks for the reply! Id love to have a set of abu 6500lc, but at $120 each it would take me a few months! I went to gander to take a look around, and fooled with the okuma magda md20dx and the daiwa accudepth 27. same features and spool size. Will hold 210yds of 20lb test. I must say, the daiwa feels leaps and bounds better than the okuma. Sticker price was $50 for okuma and $80 for the daiwa. Only thing better about the okuma was the ratio. Okumas was 5.1:1 and daiwa was 4.1:1. Other than that it's a pretty easy decision. ( I did find some brand new sets of the okuma, 4 for $135 shipped, which is pretty hard to beat)

are you looking to use braid or mono main line? Ive been testing out some of PowerPro's Depth Hunter braid on 6500 C3's with good results. The line is marked every 5 feet with a black "Tick" mark and line color changes every 25 feet.

It's tough when you're trying to outfit a full set to start..... that's why a lot of us have or started with the Okuma's - they are a decent enough reel for SML - you get what you pay for but they'll get you fishing and in many cases last longer than you'd perhaps want them to - but you could then slowly add some nicer reels to the collection as you go over time..... a birthday present here, a Christmas present there..... etc..... My wife tells me that she's finished shopping for my birthday's and Christmas's for the next 10 or so years....

Good idea toys, about the braid. I am fishing graphite rods so not sure I want to go that route. Ward you are right about that. I usually start with a full set of cheaper stuff, and then little by little change them all out to nicer setups. I got lucky on friday though, walked into Gander and they had their $60 6'6" graphite rods on sale for $15, so I bought 6 of them!! I already have a full line of catfish rigs, just working on my striper setup now. Honestly I just got finished with the boat and motor restoration. Then it was rod holders, bait tank, batteries and on-board charger, electronics (Side imaging and electric steer trolling motor), so all that is done!! In retrospect, buying a set of reels shouldn't be too big of a deal. Just wondering how many line counter reels to get, cause they arent the most cast-worthy poles of the bunch!!

How many depends on how big your boat is and how many rods you'll want to fish. 6 is probably the most you'd need - you can mix/match that way - 6 down in the summer or use less down and some a lightlines, etc.....
